Catherine was an early riser and could be found at her desk most mornings by seven o'clock. Maybe one more read-through, maybe just a little more polish, Leah thought, hitting the print icon on her computer. Leah preferred to do her editing on paper rather than on the computer screen. As she stood up and leaned forward to reach the pages that slid quietly from her printer, she knocked over the pile of mail and memos she had previously shoved aside.
Cursing softly, she knelt down to pick them up. Carolyn, her ever-efficient assistant, had put little sticky notes on just about every item in the stack.
Allen in production on this piece Dropping everything else to the side of her desk, she slipped one finger under the partially opened flap on the back of the envelope marked personal and confidential. It took several readings before she understood the message. Even then, she did not -- could not -- believe what she was seeing. Her knees weak, she dropped into her chair and, with shaking hands, read it over yet again. And then she began to cry. McDevitt, " Catherine read aloud from the letter a white-faced Leah had met her with before she'd even managed to welcome her cousin home or open her office door.
I know where your sister is.
Does this mean I get the reward? Finally, she looked up at Leah and said, "It's another hoax, honey. You know it is. Just like the others have all been. Anyone could use his name. Texas had earned the right, however, by virtue of the fact that they'd caught him first and tried and sentenced him even before his long trail of homicides had been unraveled.
Catherine tossed the letter onto her desk and sat down, her bottom jaw clenched. Through all the trials, and all the hoopla over this guy, all of his confessions, he's never mentioned her name.
Didn't the host of that television show ask you if the reward was still available? People have told much bigger lies for a whole lot less. Catherine's blue eyes had darkened and narrowed with concern, her mouth had been drawn into a tight, controlled line. Catherine Connor had not risen to the top of her field by losing her head even under the most emotional circumstances. Calculated where Leah was spontaneous, precise where Leah might be impulsive, Catherine managed the magazine in the same manner in which she managed her life.
There was no room in either for anything that wasn't concrete, factual. This letter was obviously a hoax as far as Catherine was concerned and, as such, merited no more of her time.

The paper ball rolled slightly to the left and bounced off the wall. God knows that I would do anything in this world to find Melissa. But I don't believe for one second that this guy is doing anything but pulling your chain. If I recall correctly, he was known to enjoy torturing people. Don't be another one of his victims, Lee. Maybe I am -- " "Of course you're not, sweetie," Catherine's response was quick and certain. As long as you and I believe she could still come home, does it matter what anyone else thinks?
If I thought there was any chance that Lambert knew anything about Melissa's disappearance, I'd be on the first plane to Texas. The balled-up letter lay near the door, and she bent down to pick it up. Crushing it within her fisted hand, she returned to her office and looked out the window, her mind abuzz with a million thoughts that careened off each other like tiny bumper cars. Finally she buzzed Carolyn. The serial killer Raymond Lambert?
As much as you can find, as quickly as you can get it. The printing was small and precise. No superfluous curls or flourishes. Even the message was clear and to the point.

Sanger doesn't want to get involved. Lambert had left his mark on Ethan years before. Leah convinces him to help not knowing their world is about to come crashing down around them. Brown-Eyed Girl is beautifully written and keeps your attention. I would have given this book a five except there were times that it was a little too obvious what was coming.
However, this is one sharp book. Read it, you'll enjoy it. My pre-reviewers have summarized this book so many times; there isn't just anything else I could add. The plot is gripping, right from the beginning. Although straightforward, its pace is rather slow and focuses mainly on emotions and not action. Readers who might interpret "emotions" as "sex" will be disappointed, since there are no such explicit scenes included.
There are though some implied and very decent moments The main characters, Ethan and Leah, are very plausible, likeable and well-developed. The supporting characters were also great and added very nicely to the story. In general, a very entertaining read. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I'll be honest, I didn't like this book, I wasn't caught up in it at all. First, it was very slow starting - I like books that get right down to it from the first pages and keep it like that as you continue. Second, the book had too many narratives about nature for my taste, so, to be honest, I ended up skipping through a lot of pages.
Even the conversations between main characters weren't that interesting. The mystery was just OK also. Warning, a little spoiler here: From the romance part, because the story had a sad part to both character past stories, the heat between them wasn't on the forefront, and that made it not so exciting for my taste. Someone had tossed a red chiffon scarf, scented with lilac toilet water, over the shade. The guys hunkered down in the corner talking cars and motorcycles, debating the merits of each.
One of the girls, Connie or Darlene, suggested a game of spin the bottle. A crude circle formed. Girls on one side, guys on the other. The guys elbowing one another as they lowered themselves to the floor. A Hires root beer bottle magically appeared in the center of the circle, still spinning.

I looked over my options. Since Ronnie had my heart, naturally he was my first choice. Having already stolen a kiss from me the first time I met him, I wished with all my heart for another. Chick was another matter. He was much older than me, older than anyone in the room. All the guys were in awe of him, looked up to him. His popularity soaring when he let them take turns driving his Chevy around the block. Whiskers grew on his chin, upper lip, and he had sideburns.
There was something James Deansque about him. Someone like Chick would never be interested in me, the baby of the group. I just want to let people know what this author said in her comment.
