The archaic and incorrect view that addiction is a moral choice amenable to punishment is slowly being replaced by a more accurate depiction of addiction as a brain disease warranting empathy and treatment. Sviolka's book recounts a journey of great courage, honesty, and humility.

The Hacking of the American Mind with Dr. Robert Lustig

It truly "puts a face" on both the troubling world of the addict and the "promise" of serenity provided by recovery. This detailed and masterly written chronicle of Dr. Sviolka's tragedies and triumphs should serve as inspiration to all who likewise have suffered from the impact of addiction. This is an absolutely absorbing read in and of itself. No connection to addiction is required to be caught up in this story of a fall from grace followed by a truely remarkable recovery. In addition, it serves two important purposes.

First, it puts a "face on addiction" which is important to remove the stigma that accompanies this disease which crosses all boundaries. We are facing an epidemic that affects addicts and their families alike: Secondly it indicates warning signs and gives practical information about how to obtain the help needed. Addition is not just for "those people"- you know Addiction is amongst the ones "at the top" as well as the middle and lower class.

Addiction doesn't stay away from lawyers and definately not doctors. This book shows how addiction can affect anyone- even a Harvard doctor. Good book, showing how even when one seems to have lost everything, there is still hope!

What is Kobo Super Points?

This book is great whether you have been addicted, know someone who is, or no nothing about drug addicts at all. Without giving away the entire plot, I will just say that it is a pretty quick read, and one that starts out and grabs your attention from The author who happens to be a med student when he first gets addicted, is very honest about everything he did, and how he hid it all from everyone at first.

I think everyone who reads it will really like it. I enjoyed the honesty and The decent into addiction from a Doctors point of view. To see someone so esteemed fall from grace makes you rethink your ideas of who the typical "addict" is.. He was up quite high in society at one point only to fall so low, but along the well tells a genuine and honest story filled w insight from his heart.

From Harvard to Hell…and Back: A Doctor’s Journey Through Addiction to Recovery

He is remorseful for his mistakes, that much you can feel throughout the pages.. Very enjoyable read I highly recommend it. A must read for family and friends of people struggling with addiction also for those addicted or in recovery. Dr "Skip" is a great doctor too, I know from first hand experience dealing with him how passionate he is about people getting clean and staying clean!

Very well written and gives a unique look at how people with addictions are treated and how in some ways that expertly needs to change.

Sometimes I was irritated by the author's self-centered attitude, but I think that for him this was part of the disordered thinking that led to his addiction problem, and he seemed to change as he went through recovery. Like reality TV, this was a compelling story to read if only to find out what happens to the "good doctor" Well-told, easy read with some very pertinent insights.

Recently-written, by a doctor, and briefly also addresses the lack of collaborative science knowledge and application in the field of addiction medicine. Also addresses solution propositions. Quite repetitive and a little dry throughout most of the chapters Last chapter and epilogue contained the best info and advice. Twelve step programs were MADE for blowhards like this. Nice story but I spent so much of it wanted to kick him in the nuts.
