Packed with action, adventure, horror, and some weird elements where Sawyer blends the lines between reality and hallucinations.
To begin with it appears as if the story will simply echo the first book but it quickly diverges from that path, brings in new elements, while also providing more of a back story on Lazarus. We get to see what happened to him growing up, we find out more about his sister, and we learn just how far he and some of the other Sim Operators can be pushed. Great character development, as always, some big surprises in the story I didn't see coming and overall it was a really fun SF action read.
A real page turner as well as I've burned through it in less than a week. Jul 15, elidemelnibone rated it really liked it Shelves: Mar 28, Susana rated it really liked it. Book two is an amazing sci-fi masterpiece. The action and plot twists were perfectly placed. Blown away for sure!! In general this books is a fairly ordinary military marine grunt story combined with a discovery and investigation of an ancient alien civilization.
Well the first discovery itself was done prior to this book but they do indeed discover new aspects of this alien civilization during the course of this book. To complicate the situation the humans are, surprise surprise, at war between themselves as well. What sets the book apart somewhat is the simulant technology with which the marines transfer the consciousness into artificially grown bodies. It is a good adventure story although, personally, I could have been without the human versus human conflict part and the sabotage, infiltration and general mess this causes.
The mystery of the ancient alien race and the war against the Krell would have been quite sufficient for me. Harris Lazarus and his team are sent to investigate a second artefact together with a small fleet and a reluctant as well as obstructive Admiral commanding the fleet. This second artefact is not as similar to the first one as they believe and some, costly, surprises await them.
As I hinted above the situation is much complicated by the human versus human conflict and infiltrators and saboteurs are doing their best to screw our friends. As the situation grow dire our friends have to use the ancient technology in the artefact to survive. As the book ends the future does look uncertain for our friends. The ending is indeed quite a bit of a cliff-hanger. It was an enjoyable read, not wow great as far as I am concerned, but definitely enjoyable.
Good characters and adequately well written. I will certainly pick up the next one in this series. Major Harris and his team manage to find their way home after escaping from Helios. But things have changed. The Directorate is everywhere, agents have infiltrated even the military. Sci-Dev has worked at understanding the key that was recovered from Helios and they have recovered the data needed to navigate the maelstrom. So Major Harris get's his wish, to go back to the Maelstrom and search for Elena. However, upon reaching Damascus Space and finding the artefact, Major Harris finds himself in Major Harris and his team manage to find their way home after escaping from Helios.
However, upon reaching Damascus Space and finding the artefact, Major Harris finds himself in a fight to survive and not from Krell, but from the Directorate. And activating the artefact may be their only hope. I love this series, highly recommended. I became attached to each member of Lazarus Team I certainly will read the 3rd book My complains are that the behavior of the main character is still weird, especially his psychology and the whole dynamic with the Directorate doesn't feel very realistic.
Overall there are no real improvement over the first book so if you didn't like the first, you probably won't like the second. If you did like it, the second is more of the same. I was really looking forward to reading this after reading Book 1 - Artefact. Lots of action sequences and make it count moments. LOVED the new characters who really complimented the rest of the squad. Plenty of surprises and twists to the story. Was really left wanting more.
A really exciting sci-fi opera which doesn't bog you down with military spec detail or technical speak which I loathe in a book. Looking forward to Book 3 and also the novella that is coming out soon too. Aug 28, Lola Rachels rated it it was amazing. Jan 13, Frank rated it really liked it.
Obviously read the first one then this one!! Infact this is the first book in a long time that I am chomping at the bit for the next installment! And that is pretty good too! Sep 14, Peter rated it it was amazing. Read this one because I really liked the first book 'Artefact'.

I liked how we learnt more about the universe that the characters exist in, and hope there will be more of that in future books. I think I'm hooked on this series; would definitely recommend to readers of SF. Highly entertaining, exciting military science fiction - fast and fun! It retains the action from the first book but instead of their real bodies there's much more sims this time around. There's also new characters but they don't really spend too much time with them but they're fine. I wish Mason had more time between being a newbie to grizzled vet cause she almost died.
The Legion Series
It's the same for Loeb as well. The legion had more character history added to it but it didn't really go any where. Conrad is front and center most of the book this time around. Less team fights and coordination which was a disappointment but it made up for it with all the sim fights. We also got to know Conrad a lot better this time around.
Jumping back in time to see his relationship with his family and why he joined the army. I wish more happened but the book is basically divided into: This leads into the 3rd book much more than the 1st leads into this one. I actually like the inclusion of the new characters as they were proper allies rather than a ragtag group like the 1st book. But granted Sawyer does know how to write an action scene. A plus compare to the 1st book is that there's is a lot less exposition from Conrad so that's great.
This book could've been stronger if it was character driven rather than action set pieces driven. This is the second book in the Lazarus War trilogy by Jamie Sawyer. I must say that this is first rate Military Science Fiction. To ask other readers questions about Unmarked , please sign up. Is there going to be another. Dec 07, Carol [Goodreads Addict] rated it it was amazing Shelves: Unmarked is book 2 in The Legion series by Kami Garcia.
I have been on a quest to finish up sequels that have been recently released of series I have started. For some unknown to me reason, I saved this one for last. I gave the first book four stars. Nineteen days have passed since the ending of the Unmarked is book 2 in The Legion series by Kami Garcia. Nineteen days have passed since the ending of the first book. Nineteen days of Kennedy wondering if her friends were okay and where they were. Nineteen days of loneliness.
But Kennedy is fine with it. She blames herself for everything. The world is in turmoil. The weather has gone crazy and girls are disappearing. The crazy thing is that each one of the girls has a strong resemblance to Kennedy. Then a cryptic messages appears on her mirror: Jared finally finds out where she is and sneaks into her school to get her. But Kennedy is convinced she should not go with him. She believes everything is her fault and since she still has not received her mark which would make her the fifth missing member of the legion, she is convinced that she does not belong.
Elle has also joined them now. I loved getting to know her a little better. Faith, though, has not had an easy life and is a bit out there we might say. She has the most awesome dog, a Doberman named Bear. This dog is just amazing. Faith is able to give the kids a little more information but mostly leaves them with more questions. She has dreams of what is to come. Kennedy has so many questions.
She wants to know why her father left her. But time runs out on them before they are ready. This book was just so amazingly good. Intense does not even describe it! There are so many surprises and revelations. Nothing is what we thought. And there are so many twists and turns. We get some oh so sweet moments between Jared and Kennedy. Even though they are young, these two are truly in love. Along with the sweet moments, though, there are some heartbreaking ones as well.
So put on your seatbelt and dive in. Kami Garcia, you are a genius. Yes, there is a cliffhanger! We are left totally hanging. Garcia, hurry up and get the next book written. You are my truth. It turned out Kennedy's mother was a member of this rouge sect known as the order and was spying on the aunts side of the family by getting together with Kennedy's father. It turned out that the order was responsible for a lot of the bad things that had happened to legion members in the past and that the real illuminati had actually taken it upon themselves to rid the world of demons as well.
The demon had been gathering strength by possessing different bodies and had finally lodged itself in Jared's body Kennedy's boyfriend it was also revealed that Kennedy had illuminati blood in her because of her mam and not only that. It was also revealed that she was the white dove the one who would free the black doves legion members from their fights and duties. After the demon managed to summon another demon into the world the group of legion and illuminati split up one group trying to hunt the new demon while the other stays behind to watch Jared and the demon who were kept under control by a whip turned collar made of demon bones.
At the end it was revealed that Kennedy is not only the white dove but she is also the vessel which is a thing capable of trapping and holding a demon so she's the only hope for Jared and the book ends there. I mean I get that emotions are running high given all that's going on but couldn't the author have done something to not make it so melodramatic? For me a lot of the disputes felt like little kids squabbling.
There are still some revelations which had me intrigued but the characters and lack of drive in the plot stopped me from enjoying this Jan 31, Neil or bleed rated it liked it Shelves: And the white dove set you free. Besides, I think the characters didn't improve at all or didn't undergo a good characterization Maybe, they did. But it isn't remarkable or even noticeable for me. And the romance is still unconvincing. Anyway, I still gave Unmarked 3. Senseful, note-worthy and mind-blowing. It redeemed some of my disappointments. And it made the world, the story more complicated and interesting. I bet the third book will be a blast.

Trouble may be closer than she thinks, however, as mysterious events begin happening at the school - not to mention a rash of disappearances nearby, where all of the victims bear a startling resemblance to Kennedy. Eventually t Unmarked picks off a few weeks after events of Unbreakable , with Kennedy pining away at her new boarding school for Jared and the rest of her friends, and trying on her own to track the mysterious and trouble events that have been occurring since the events at the prison.
Eventually the group manages to find their way to each other once again, and the real story starts as they are once again faced with the seemingly impossible task of defeating Andras before he can destroy everything they hold dear. They'll have to decide just how far they're willing to go, however, when during their first real encounter they run into some unexpected allies, and must decide whether or not to trust them, despite all they've been taught.
The first book, while slow to start off, did draw me in and make me look forward to seeing what happened next. We also saw some genuinely creepy settings, the orphanage and the prison, and I was looking forward to what our protagonists would be running into next. Sadly, it's not as good as I expected after the prison. This wouldn't be bad on it's own - there's plenty of books with fascinating stories taking place in boarding schools, haunted houses, and the like.
But there's just not a lot going on while they're there, either. Most of what we see is the group getting to know their new 'allies', deciding whether or not to trust them, and occasionally working on finding a solution to dealing with Andras before the world ends. It's a lot of angst and little action, especially with Kennedy mooning over Jared the whole time. Compared to the eeriness of the orphanage ghosts, and especially how creepily the prison and it's inhabitants, I wasn't impressed by what we're shown of Andras so far, either.
He's somewhat cunning, but not more so than one could expect of a human enemy. His actions, and those he influences others to make are not what I'd expect either - he causes some awful things to happen, yes, but not more than could be done by a human. He's not as creepy as you'd expect of a demonic enemy, or as impressive. It wasn't a bad book, but it was a bit dull compared to the first. It feels like it's more build-up to the next stage of the plot than a book on it's own.
I'm definitely going to check out the last book when it comes out - hopefully things will pick up and we'll get somewhere in that one. The ACR got here in two days.
I was dying to get my hands on an ARC because I couldn't bare to wait any longer. I love Kami Garcia's writing style, she always sucks me in from the beginning and glues me to the pages. The story is so addicting and satisfying, that I literary wanted to stomp my feet like a little kid, screaming "I want it NOW" when I was done this book. Seriously, it was that amazing!!! The world has become a living nightmare Andras, a powerful demon has been set free and wrecking havoc on the world. Killing and controlling anyone he pleases and turning their world into hells playground, and he's just getting started Kennedy is the one who set Andras free from his eternal prison.
She is the one who is responsible for all the lives that have and will be lost at the hands of the vengeful demon, but she vows to stop him, or die trying! Kennedy has finally been reunited with the other members of the Legion. Well not the other members, because she's not even sure if she's really even a member of the Legion or not, because she is still unmarked. But Kennedy can't bare the thought to leave.
She knows it's not where she belongs, but her heart is pulling her to the only place she ever felt she really belonged, and that's in Jared's arms. Jared, one of the twins who saved her life on more then one occasion from a paranormal being, and the other members of the Legion have become her only family. Since her mother was murdered by a vengeful spirit, and her father walked out on her when she was young, Kennedy has felt alone, until now.
So when Jared finds her after their separation, she's ready to get back with the Legion and undo the mess she created that horrible night she unleashed hell upon earth. But that's only "IF" it can even be undone As the members of the Legion race against time to find the demon wrecking havoc all over the states, they come face to face with an enemy organization called Illuminati.
But what information they bring and secrets they hold, could very well change everything the Legion once thought. But time is running out as the demons start multiplying, and the deaths become more frequent. The Legion and the Illuminati realize they will have to put aside their differences and work together if they're going to have any chance at finding and destroying the demons once and for all. But when a surprise visit from someone in the groups past surface, and someone else in the group in grave danger, they realize they might just of ran out of time I think fans of supernatural and paranormal books will find this one just as addicting and satisfying as I did!!
Even if you're not a big fan of paranormal books, I recommend you still give it a try, because it's not that dark, bloody, gory type read, so you might find yourself enjoying it!! Overall, UNMARKED was a great second book with twist and turns that satisfied, enough action and drama that kept me entertained, and a continued romance that I loved from the first book!!

View all 4 comments. This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life I received an advance reader edition of this book from Little, Brown and Company via Net Galley for the purpose of providing an honest review. I recently read and enjoyed the first in the series, Unbreakable. This book did not disappoint as it lived up my expectations after reading the first book in the series.
This book was a fast paced book with lots action, much like the first in the series. I would recommend that this series be read in order because this book picks up right where the first left off and the events of the first book are often discussed. This book opens with Kennedy being not only separated from her group of friends, members of the Legion, but also being sent away to school by her aunt. The book gets it title from the fact that Kennedy remains unmarked after killing a spirit which means she is not actually a part of the Legion.
She is not only crushed by that knowledge but by the knowledge that her actions have release a strong demon into the world. She tracks the demon by focusing on crime and notes that a string of girls have disappeared - all of which look very much like her. Her friends have not forgotten her and she reunited with them after they track her down at school. Her friend, Elle, is with the rest of the group.
Together they work to track the demon and find a way to destroy it before it is able to destroy the world. Their journey forces Kennedy to look into her family tree for answers and she realizes that everything may not be exactly as she had thought. This book has a lot of twist and turns and is just plain fun to read. The writing flowed and I found myself consuming this story. The love triangle that I found annoying in the first book was gone in this book with Kennedy focused on only one of the boys.
I found the characters a bit more likeable in this book than in the first. My only real complaint with this book was that there was no solid resolution. The ending was not abrupt and I am actually okay with the ending but it would have been nice to have seen everything get wrapped up with a nice little bow. I would definitely recommend this book to others that enjoy a light paranormal story, especially those that enjoyed this first book in the series.
I plan to continue with this series and cannot wait to see what else is in store for Kennedy and her friends.
