Consisting primarily of speeches that Moses gave to the Israelites shortly before they entered the Promised Land, Moses' words proclaimed God's covenant faithfulness in hopes of motivating the Israelites to obey God despite the coming temptation to conform to the Canaanite culture.

The challenges they faced then are remarkably parallel to those facing Christians today as we grapple with the issue of obedience in a world that offers other attractive ways of life. How can we be faithful to God? And how do we help our children and the people we lead to be faithful? This book tells us how Moses tackled these challenges and, as Paul confirms in the New Testament, Deuteronomy serves "as an example Ajith Fernando unpacks the relevance of Deuteronomy and captivates us with rich anecdotes from his thirty-five years of ministry to first-generation Christians in Sri Lanka.

He offers concrete examples of how the truths contained in Deuteronomy can be applied, and he teaches us that obedience is the necessary response to the God who loves and saves us. Fernando and Block complement one another. The uniqueness of Fernando's commentary includes: However, he does seem to comment on almost every word and phrase.

Fernando was born in and ministers in Sri Lanka, and for many years with the Youth for Christ ministry in that country. That context, which differs from my American setting, enhances the value of the commentary to me. Sep 26, Michael Boling rated it it was amazing. Deuteronomy is one of those books that many find themselves bogged down in as they work their way through their yearly Bible reading plan.

Furthermore, finding a commentary that you can connect to and for that matter, one that demonstrates with great clarity the underlying message of the book of Deuteronomy is itself a challenge. A book of the Bible such as Deuteronomy can be confusing and admittedly boring to read unless one grasps what God is saying.

In fact, in the Old Testament the life of faith is often described as walking in the fear of the Lord, an emphasis that may be needed today when people tend to be careless about sticking to Christian principles in every sphere of life. Since this is a rather lengthy commentary that is replete with salient insight, I will focus the remainder of this review on a couple of notable highlights. In his analysis of Deuteronomy 1: The people of Israel are camped at Horeb and have been given the command by God to depart in order to finally enter the Promised Land.

One can only imagine the tense feelings that permeated the hearts and minds of the people during this time of uncertainty. The first step towards entering the land of promise was faith in God and His promises.

Fear is a reality, but it does not need to overcome us and lead to defeat. Such fear can only be defeated by faith in our sovereign God. Throughout Scripture, God continually demonstrates His abhorrence of adultery. There is no wiggle room with adultery. It is dangerous for anyone to think that he is above temptation in this area. They are far more than simply dates on the Jewish calendar or something completely unimportant for believers today to read and understand.

In fact, when we partake of communion for example, we are remembering Jesus as the Passover Lamb. They remind us of God moving throughout history on behalf of His people and Fernando does a great job of explaining that very truth. I highly recommend this commentary for all believers but especially for pastors. The outstanding exegesis, valuable application, and recommendations contained throughout on how pastors can share the underlying message found in Deuteronomy of loving obedience to a loving God is what makes this volume well worth the read.

It will become a valuable tool for developing sermons not just on Deuteronomy itself, but also in regards to the many topics Deuteronomy touches on that are repeated throughout Scripture.

The opinions I have expressed are my own. Very practical and theologically sound commentary I was teaching an adult Sunday school class in Deuteronomy and found this commentary very useful! Fernando has given us a commentary that will appeal to all those who preach the Word. While showing an awareness of scholarly treatments, the work is very accessible to those who do not have scholarly training. It is highly recommended. Like all of his preaching, this book is a model of the wonderful gift that God has given to Ajith Fernando for simple, clear, and challenging exposition of the Word of God.

Without evading the more difficult questions and problems that scholars have wrestled with in the book of Deuteronomy, he does not allow them to dominate but stays close to the thrust of the text, patiently explaining and applying it step by step. This book is a deep well of Biblical study, ethical challenge, practical advice, pastoral wisdom, and spiritual warmth. He and his wife, Nelun, are active in a church ministering primarily to the urban poor, and his ministry includes counseling and mentoring younger staff and pastors.

It's a large book and the product of 8 years of Fernando's work but this commentary is about the most-quoted-by-Jesus book of the Old Testament. That was enough for me to buy this and I look forward to investing time in studying and applying it. The difference that Pastor Fernando brings to us is that he is a pastor-theologian who has been through one of the worst civil wars in modern times in Sri Lanka, his home country.

This alone, with his careful exegesis, gives his voice a unique moral authority that many other scholars may not necessarily have. I think this comes through time and again in all his writings. I do not expect that to be absent in this Commentary of Fernando on Deuteronomy. Allow me to share one simple example that resonates with me. In one of the sections of the book, he writes about how in the Asian context, and from his own life , even if you want to complete a large business transaction honestly after having done everything legally, it is quite possible that the other person in the transaction will not want to do so and thereby hold up the transation.

There's nothing wrong with the price or anything related to the transaction except the fact that the legal way to do it is more "transparent" and can lead to questions being asked about other trails of transactions, and so on. So what exactly is a believer to do in this situation? Fernando helpfully shares what he did in this situation.
