I thought it would be quite genetic-based from the title, but a lot of it is the story of a man tracing the bloodline of a Lipizzaner he knew as a child. It does talk about the history of the Spanish Riding School and the idea of genetic crosses and diversity, using Mendel and his pea plants as a basis.
However I'd say most of it talks about the survival of the breed during the world wars and the recent Serb-Croat conflict, the flight from the stud farm etc and draws lines along that and Hitlers Aryan Race. I did enjoy it, but I'm not sure if it's something I'd go back to and re-read. I have been to the Spanish Riding School in the past but didn't know too much about the breed so found it interesting as a background to them.
I didn't consider it too full-on and the tales of the horses helped keep my interest! January 14, — Shelved as: In Search of the Mythical Mountain. Mount Ararat in Turkey is where, as biblical tradition has it, Noah's Ark ran aground and God made his covenant with mankind. Now it stands astride the fault-line between religion and science, a geographical, political and cultural crossroads, bound up with the centuries-old history of warfare between different cultures in this region. Frank Westerman takes a pilgrimage from the mountain's foot to its highest slopes, meeting along the way geologists, priests and an expedition in search of the Ark's remains, as well as a Russian astronaut who observes that 'there is something between heaven and earth about which we humans know nothing'.

Travels with Charley in Search of America. An intimate journey across and in search of America, as told by one of its most beloved writers, in a deluxe centennial edition In September , John Steinbeck embarked on a journey across America. He felt that he might have lost touch with the country, with its speech, the smell of its grass and trees, its color and quality of light, the pulse of its people. But what begins as a fairytale becomes a chronicle of the quest for racial purity.
Carrying the reader across Europe, from imperial stables and stud farms to the controversial gene labs of today, Westerman asks, if animal breeders are so good at genetic engineering, why do attempts to perfect the human strain always end in tragedy? The One from the Other.
