I'm so intrigued by Joan Fontaine's character in this film. Cotten's makes sense, lodged as he is in a standard mid-life crisis narrative, but who is this woman who hasn't been back to her home country since she was 16, who has no family or friends except for her forbidding piano teacher, who happily torches her career to become a ghost? I long for a sequel tracing her single life in South America.
Joan Fontaine and Joe Cotten is more than enough to entertain, their works with Hitchcock being my some of my favourites. It's a thoughtful film built upon an simple but nonetheless enjoyable structure of romance, escapism and of lives not lived.

It's a song that perfectly matches the relationships troubled growth. I think I enjoyed thinking about the material as much as I enjoyed watching it, the nature of their affair is one so optimistically full of potential but struck with personal conflict and loss. Why is there so many rich films about the complexities of relationships,…. I was surprised to learn that the song was popularized by actor and rather limited singer Walter Huston in the Broadway play Knickerbocker Holiday Charles Coburn would take on the Huston role historical figure Peter Stuyvesant in the largely forgotten film version of the play.
Coincidence or not, it ends…. This review may contain spoilers.

They're passengers on a plane bound for the US and take advantage of mechanical delays to visit nearby Naples nowadays you'd be trapped physically in the airport or on the plane.
They miss their flight and on impulse decide to explore Capri and a couple of other places. Two lovers take advantage of being reported dead on a plane they were never on.
