Her body bares no marks; except for the fact that her most intimate parts have been stitched shut. But what shocks the pathologist the most is that the killer had left something inside her. Something so monstrous Detective Robert Hunter, of the Los Angeles Homicide Special Section, has to be pulled off a different case to take over the investigation.

Within days a new body surfaces. Like the previous victim, she's also been stitched shut and something has been left inside her. Something as ingenious as it is grotesque. And the killer isn't done yet, not by a long shot. When his inquiry collides with a missing persons' case being investigated by the attractive, razor-sharp Whitney Meyers, Hunter suspects the killer might be keeping several women hostage. Soon Robert finds himself on the hunt for a murderer who is much more monstrous than he ever could have expected; a predator whose past hides a terrible secret, and who won't stop until each of his victims has brought forth the awful truth Hardcover , pages.

Best one of the series so far! Really appreciated that Hunter wasn't quite as perfect as in the previous ones. This is the first time that I read a book by Chris Carter. I had come across the book in my library and the blurb and a little research in Goodreads made me give this book a try.

The book starts with the autopsy of a woman's body. I have read quite a few psycho-thriller novels with piles of brutalized corpses but what was done here was so perverse, so deranged. More shocking facts are revealed and tragedy keeps striking again and again. Robert Hunter - nice surname by the way!!! Like most detectives in literature he also experienced some personal tragedies which scarred his psyche, but unlike some of them he did not seek refuge and solace in the bottle though. I like my psycho-thrillers to have an atmosphere of tension, excitement, fear and if there is terror then I simply love it.

The author did try to create a similar atmosphere from the very beginning but I felt that somehow he was unable to maintain it. I liked how the investigation was carried out - investigation is after all a painstaking process of analyzing facts, interviewing or interrogating people, lying in wait -- mostly using your brains and testing your patience. The author did try in this respect. The obligatory and somewhat preedictable attempt at misdirection was also there. I also liked the character of Whitney Myers and the factors that led her to become what she later became. I don't want to include any spoilers in case you ever give it a try.

The writing was not exceptional or anything but I did want to turn the pages. The end was satisfying but could been better. Again, I refrain from revealing anything. I am always on the lookout for exploring the works of different authors but the problem is thriller writers are dime a dozen and hundreds of books are out there in the market - all of which are not worth your time. I am glad that I gave this novel a try.

It did provide me some entertainment and look forward to reading some more books by the author. I would rate it as 3. As for recommendations, if you don't mind some "gruesomeness" then you might want to give it a try. Mastovite ideje za nove zrtve, jednostavnost pripovijedanja, dovoljno realni likovi i okruzenje, traze dalje.. Product description

Chris Carter is without a doubt one of the best writers in crime fiction today. Quite a sweeping statement but one that I feel is the truth. In a genre like crime fiction there are so many authors to choose from, but only a small percentage of them write stories which are worth reading. Even the old school authors can't seem to write readable books anymore. All too often they rely on the shock factor, or OTT storylines.

One such author in particular is like this and their books seem to sell by the bucket load. I don't keep track of sales figures but Carter's books should surely be somewhere near the top. I challenge any crime fiction fan to reccommend me an author better than Chris and only ones who wrote their first book in the last 10 years. Chris never fails to come up with the absolute worst ways for his characters to die and, it sounds awful to say, but it does make for one hell of an enjoyable read.

You find yourself squirming at the scenes but not being able to stop reading. I started Chris's books with One By One which was pretty horrific and not entirely original but it seems his earlier work is where he was his most gruesome. As for the main character Robert Hunter, I like him and he is probably now one of my favourite fictional detectives however he is portrayed as some kind of genius, a child prodigy whose university thesis is mandatory reading for FBI trainees.

It usually annoys me having a perfect detective who can solve every crime however it doesn't here because I feel that Hunter is actually quite a realistic and believable character despite this 'perfectness'. The short chapters mean that this is a hard book to put down. Once again Carter tells a gripping story and it was nice that the person that saved the day wasn't necessarily the person you would expect it to be. Series crime fiction is my favourite crime fiction because you get to know the characters and feel like they are your friends, which means it is always a shock when major characters are killed off early in the book.

Usually when a main character finds themselves in danger I don't really care because you know they will survive in the end but Carter strikes me as the type of author that wouldn't necessarily follow this unwritten rule and I wouldn't be surprised if other main characters are killed off in future books. Overall this was another fantastic read and I am only gutted that I have one more book left to read in the series. I only hope the wait for the next one isn't too long.

The Night Stalker

Quando leio um livro procuro encontrar determinados detalhes que marquem o autor, e depois tentar perceber como os gere ao longo dos seus livros. O que para mim If you love a good a good 'get in there' psychological thriller, then this is definitely the one for you. This book gives it all in spades. Why hasn't Chris Carter got more recognition for his works?

These books are amazing but definitely NOT for the faint hearted. Even though the content was intense and full of non stop action, it was an easy to read book and could be read quite quickly. I loved the way each chapter ended with a little tease to make you want to turn the page straight away. It did ke If you love a good a good 'get in there' psychological thriller, then this is definitely the one for you.

It did keep me up at night, not the content as such but the lure of the short teasing chapters.

It is evident throughout that Chris's career as a criminal psychologist played a huge part in this book. I did work out who 'The Night Stalker' was before detective Hunter but it was so cleverly written and full of intrigue, detail and twists that it didn't feel 'ended' just because I figured out who it was.

It still had me hooked and wanting to know more and was, if I'm honest, gutted I'd finished this exciting book.

This book is number 3. I will definitely be reading more and will be adding this one to my favourites. Nov 09, Mark rated it really liked it Shelves: I found another installment of the Robert Hunter books by Chris Carter non- X-files person, which has been remarked upon probably way too many time so once more does not matter at all.

I am still catching up with the books of this writer so I am not reading them in sequence. But the last one I read was the most recent release by Carter which was somewhat dissatisfying and now I read the third in the series which was another kettle of fish altogether. The gruesomeness of the acts the perpetrato I found another installment of the Robert Hunter books by Chris Carter non- X-files person, which has been remarked upon probably way too many time so once more does not matter at all. The gruesomeness of the acts the perpetrators conflict on their victims seems to be a calling card for the writer Carter, which makes you wonder where these ideas come from and about the mental health of the writer.

The various layers used in the story come together at the end of the book which feels like a formula 1 race in the last laps. It keeps you reading. Once again Chris Carter shows you how to write a fascinating story with an interesting twist and story while thrilling his readers as well. The book has very short chapters, a similar choice by James Patterson, does give the story a lighter feel and makes for easy and quick reading. This series is really entertaining, so what does that say about me psychologically?

However do not binge read this series it might not be the healthiest of ideas when you look upon the subject: Jun 04, Patrizia rated it really liked it Shelves: Nem acredito nos sustos que Chris Carter me prega. Aug 11, Mandy White rated it it was amazing Shelves: I love this series! I went into town on a sunny but cold day last week. The sunshine was so tempting that I thought I would spend half an hour or so on the Promenade and enjoy the rays.

However, when I do that and it is often in the summer I always have a book with me; on this occasion, because I was not expecting to visit the Prom, I did not have one. I therefore went back to the nearby shops and looked for one to purchase. The only one that took my eye, because I knew my daughter loved Chris Carter, was 'The Ni I went into town on a sunny but cold day last week.

I knew from my discussions with Debz that Chris Carter wrote the modern day gritty, gory type of thriller, a genre that I do not usually read. However, in the absence of anything else that took my fancy, I duly purchased it. And, having done so I have not regretted the decision. Consequently the tension builds throughout the book to an absorbing and most appropriate climax. View our Privacy Policy.
