What kept it from getting a full five stars? Similar complaints to what others have mentioned. Yes, the language in the first chapter is rough, the investigating officer is a misogynist, and the bad guy is a bit of a stereotype as well. But there is plenty to like once you get past those minor annoyances.

Writing a novel like this is no easy feat. I applaud the author's effort. It came together nicely at the end. I would read another of his books. One person found this helpful. To get across an opinion of a character, the reference used mentioned a right leaning political group and Fox News. Unfortunately, if this is the best reference available, then that's just sad. Fast, compelling and graphic read.

Learn about "The Rythym", and balancing of justice. Believable characters, entertaining dialogue and story line. I would have given this four stars if there had been more work about "The Rythym" and less graphic descriptions of what the victims of the serial killers suffered. I will not re-read this story but am interested in other works in this series.

Too many coincidences keep Whisper in the Dark from being a five star book. Still, the character development is excellent and the characters' actions always made sense.

  3. Whisper In The Dark by Robert Gregory Browne.

Browne actually convinced me that I was wrong about the identity of the killer and surprised me at the end. I would like to see Detective Blackburn in a future novel; he anchored the novel and made the coincidences almost realistic. Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. I was truly impressed with Browne's debut, "Kiss Her Goodbye," where his characters and complex plot draw the reader in and keep you hostage until the very end where you want more.

However, his artistry and talent as a supernatural thriller writer surpassed expectations with "Whisper in the Dark. The dialgue is crisp and moves the plot of the story as a true page-turner should. I can't wait to read his future works. Even though I would not normally read sci-fi, the storyline drew me in right away.

More from the same

Easy to read, well written and twisty, I was pleasantly surprised. Characters could be a bit more defined; they need to be recognized and remembered, I believe. Will read this author again. I don't do spoilers, blurbs, or storyline critiques, You want an engaging story with side issues and a satisfying conclusion -go no further.

This book moves the reader along with an excellent pace, a twisted plot, and detectives who weave the way to an unexpected resolution. Detective Blackburn blazes his way through another perilous maze, gets knocked down but keeps on going. Doc Tolan makes a great character of interest with a well-developed history we can empathize with, but the best part of this story is the supernatural slant. Great story Robert Gregory Browne.

  • I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book. I was taking a friend for a haircut in this one random mall I have never been in, and when we took a detour to the grocery store, we found a table filled with a number of books. Being a bookaholic and all, I rushed to the table and began to peruse the paperbacks. The price she gave was ridiculously low and I left the little book sale with some books and an empty wallet.

The first line of the book literally starts with "It was a pretty uneve I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book. The first line of the book literally starts with "It was a pretty uneventful night until the naked lady tried to kill him. The next chapter has a very similar opening, a fantastic hook right into the beginning of a long wild tale of mystery, intrigue, horror and amazing characters that are too real to be fictional. Each chapter ends on a high, like an episode of a really well done TV series and you can't wait for the next episode I flew through this book so quickly, it was a pleasant surprise.

One minute I was reading the first page and when I looked up, I was fifty pages in; that is how much I enjoyed this book. Although the events happen in a single day 24 anyone? There was also a lot of mystery surrounding the doctor, the witness, the detective and the quiet "rhythm" that reverberates throughout the book. For the first time in a long while, I did not see the ending coming. It caught me completely off guard, redirected my attention from the obvious so well that when it was revealed, I wondered how I missed it all.

I am definitely keen on finding more books by Robert Gregory Browne, as I thoroughly enjoyed this book. He might very well become my new Stephen King. Jan 19, Jenn rated it it was ok Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. That's how I feel about this. Kind of a lackluster thriller. Didn't find myself on the edge of my seat.

Didn't really care which characters lived or died. I was surprised only when they killed off the main cops partner. That was something I really didn't expect. The setting of a psych hospital wasn't a surprise.

And the whole Rhythm voodoo thing was just silly. The transforming of the druggie model girl into Abby - yeah like that could ever happen. I'm surprised I finished this one. Maybe I expected an unexpected turn to happen. Pretty good book, fun read. It was pretty obvious, and I'm not a very smart person who always knows who-done-it before the end. But not a bad book to read, I enjoyed it anyway. Jun 14, Marie-Antoinette rated it it was ok. I do love a good thriller, but if I am not hooked from the first page, then I have totally lost interest.

I really expected a very good book as the blurb sounded very nice — the type of book I am interested in. Even the cover was nicely done — it all looked promising. To give a little background: The hero of the piece is Detective Frank Blackburn, an American cop with commitment to his job, but inclined to be rather tactless at times.

A murder is being investigated and a strange, incoherent woma I do love a good thriller, but if I am not hooked from the first page, then I have totally lost interest. A murder is being investigated and a strange, incoherent woman covered in blood is picked up by the police and brought into Baycliff Hospital detention unit. Blackburn hopes she can be urged to talk, as he feels she could have been a witness to the murder. Unsure of her mental health though he leaves her in the care of Michael Tolan, a famous psychiatrist that Blackburn turned to in previous cases.

He feels if anyone can get through to the woman, Tolan is the one but one can not be so sure about it as Tolan has his own demons he is fighting against as it is the anniversary of his wife's death or rather murder. She Abby was the victim of a grisly murder.

It was believed that she was murdered by the serial killer nicknamed Vincent Van Gogh — because of his peculiar trait of removing one of the victim's ears. It is often complex with a large number of regular characters turning up. I have read a book before with a similar story line and this book just gets too confusing and I loose interest as too many people is brought in that has nothing to do with the whole story.

Maybe it was because I started reading the book after a very interesting book, but this was a bit of a let down for me.
