Lemon said he could not say if any charges would result and noted that OSHA was leading the investigation.

The federal agency could not be reached for comment Thursday night. It happened around 10 o'clock Thursday morning at Alliance Construction Materials northwest of Ocala. The man wasn't seriously hurt. The foot drop was steep and covered with cinderblocks. Charles McCrone was supposed to be dumping the blocks. Instead, he and his front-end loader went in. His boss says he never should have been using equipment this heavy. The drop didn't crush the passenger cabin. So, McCrone pried himself from the mangled mess and made it half way up the degree incline.

Then he ran out of gas. That's when the technical rescue team arrived. Three rescuers used an elaborate system of ropes to repel down to McCrone. They say he was happy to see them. He just wanted to get out of there, get out of that situation," says rescuer Scott Ramage. The rescuers used something called a Stokes basket. They strapped him in tightly so he couldn't move much, in case he broke his back or neck, while the firefighters gingerly moved McCrone into the basket on the steep cliff.

The cinder block footing couldn't have been less stationary. Rescuers say many of their steps sent the blocks tumbling to the bottom. Once McCrone was strapped in, it was up to another team on level ground. They were able to get McCrone safely to the top and on to a hospital. The Marion County firefighters involved go through hundreds of hours of training for rescues like these.

The specific charge and investigative report have not been released by OSHA because the agency has not received notification that Dixon has received it, Tracy said. Ken Benson, 51, of Hastings, Mich. We live in California, but are seriously considering making the trip for this center. How old are you? How much do you weigh? I know the hospital is very particular, making sure weight is good, etc. Another question — did your wife come visit you? I only saw mention of them calling.

Were there other spouses visiting? Why were you given a rectal exam? When you say sponge bath, do you mean given by a nurse or done by yourself? Are you allowed to shower, as long as the wound is covered? I was 40 years old when I had my surgery double inguinal. I was about lbs, but very active overall. My wife did not come to visit as we live about an hour away, have a small family business and four kids. I was not given a rectal examination. The sponge bath was done by myself in a shower that is provided for patients there are no showers in the private bathrooms. They will give you precise details on how many days to wait before you can get the wound wet I believe it is at least one week.

I had my procedure done last year and it was great. Your perfectly fine if you have an athletic build. Their main concern is abdominal fat and groin area fat. If your lean in these areas you have nothing to worry about. I Live in California and was really worried about fitting into the chart they give out. The procedure is the best! Beware of laughing after the procedure its a killer! I was just there for bi-lateral a hernia repair 3.

But I looked and was thin and there were no issues from my Dr. You can definitely visit every day, pm, pm, many people do, though on surgery day depending on schedule might not be as feasible—I had 7am surgery and my wife visited at 2pm and 7pm on that day. No rectal exam, sponge bath is done by patient. I waited two weeks for full immersion bath, though started showers after week. My recovery has been better than I could hope, yes some pain first week, tylenol or advil controlled it fairly well, but by second week pain reduced substantially and would only take a tylenol at night, stopped everything after 10 days.

Still have a slight residual pain but back to almost every normal activity. To aid in my recovery I took lots of Vitamin C, which they recommend, and Bromelain, which they have no recommendation on either way. Thanks for the contribution to the information, brother! Glad to hear everything went well with your surgery and the trip back to NYC. I am going to Shouldice in March for an epigastric hernia repair, which is a hernia above the belly button.

I know Shouldice specializes in groin hernias so I was wondering if any former Shouldice patients have either had an umbilical or epigastric hernia fixed at Shouldice or perhaps met a patient who was there for that procedure. However, one of the doctors at the hospital will be able to answer you more appropriately. Definitely, you need to get that double inguinal taken care of pronto. For me, Shouldice was the best choice; not one regret. Yeah, some, but now they are barely noticeable. Plus your hair will grow back over them. The incisions are only about 3 to 4 inches long when they do them and scars heal very quickly.

They will accommodate your needs if you let them know, as there were vegetarians there during my stay. I used to get phantom-like symptoms, but not anymore. I train in Aikido twice a week, weightlift squats, deadlifts, etc. With a hernia sex can be uncomfortable for some. Honestly, buddy, I would recommend this type of surgery without hesitation. You are kept in the hospital long enough to see whether there are any complications.

I hope that answers your concerns. Great Blog and very helpful for me as I was a patient there the first of April, ; I would greatly recommend your blog and Shouldice. However, be glad you were not a Vegan during your stay. I am and wish I had been a Vegetarian instead because the food choices were much better and more substantial for Vegetarians. The staff did a great job in accommodating me within their budget, of course but unless I had taken a small supply of seeds and nuts I fear I would have been quite hungry. I did think ahead and tell them my Vegan needs but not sure it did any good.

I know someone who is vegan and was there last week. The hospital gave her second helpings upon asking for them and apparently the quality of food has improved. Quick reply to Keith…. Now back to skiing hard, carrying heavy firewood size logs before I split them using a wood maul, not a splitter , walking long distances—absolutely no issues.

I think you have to decide for yourself which is more important, the highest quality repair or the least noticeable. Plenty of people get laparoscopic and are happy with it, but I chose Shouldice for the quality of the repair and the fact that the complication rate is much lower at Shouldice than everywhere else. And if you end up going you are sure to meet people who are there because the surgeries they had done elsewhere failed, I met several during my 6 days there.

Complications with Shouldice surgery are extremely rare, practically non existent, especially when the hernias have never been operated on previously. Then with me it got to the point where I was beginning to have painful symptoms, started wearing a truss, and felt that my ability to function normally in athletics and everyday life was really suffering, so elected to have the operation, and am totally glad I did…..

I have had my hernias for about 10 years and one has just started to get a little worse. Size of a quails egg. Great Blog and one I read before I had my Surgery. This is my experience and I hope you do not mind my adding to your well executed description. Hi folks, this is my attempt to give back to the many who shared their stories on the web that I ran across doing my research as to how to go about getting my Inguinal Hernia repaired and how that progressed.

I am male 52, 6 foot and lbs and in good health. Last time I was in the hospital I was 10 for an eye injury. My first indication of pain occurred about 10km into a 15km row on a Concept 2 Erg or rowing machine. I went about 2 months with massage and working at it before I self diagnosed it as a Hernia. By this time the burn had progressed to a pressure expandable and reducible golf ball. A quick trip to my family physician confirmed the situation.

A cough test did not bring mine out yet, but I could make it bulge by slow internalization of pressure bearing down. He said that;s where he would go. At this point I had done some reading on Hernias but had not yet formed an opinion as to procedure. My doctor setup an appointment for Shouldice examination about 3 weeks out that worked with my travel schedule.

I fairly quickly through my readings became convinced that mesh was a mess. Shrinkage, adhesion, pain, lawsuits all caused me concern. It appeared to me as a lay person that some situations may require mesh and a Shouldice Surgeon later confirmed this to me but that avoiding it if possible was desirable. I read about Open vs Laparoscopy repair and felt that he greater field of work for the surgeon was worth the incision. In fact I became focused on the surgeon and technique as the thing that I cared about the most. The fact is that these studies are hard to compare as subject populations vary, normalization is difficult and studies that attempt to ascertain causes of failure are seldom in agreement.

Being able to get a person in and out reducing procedure cost and making the procedure simpler for a provider without great amounts of experience perhaps was a sound intention but maybe not so well executed. They currently have approximately , procedures under their belt and are conducting as far as I can determine approximately 30 procedures 5 days a week days a year. They have a journeyman operate-under-supervision-model for more than procedures before being qualified to operate unassisted.

Moreover the whole hospital exists for these Surgeons. Now Shouldice is not perfect. Customer service in the intake area is a little chaotic. They have standards they expect patients to come to in BMI. This to me is not unrealistic that they expect patients to get to an optimal point of health before they operate.

They do not apparently take some high risk patients but then they are not a full care general hospital so they are not equipped to deal with cardiac issues on the table so you are better off somewhere else if your health profile is high risk. The records staff down in the labs area are down right rude to people in intake wandering around with papers sent downstairs with no signage and no direction.

However the hospital is for the surgeons and the procedure is the key and everything else is noise. My advice here is be patient. You are here because this place is the best. You will read about the inability to select a surgeon being scary, that many people would not ever let anyone they do not know cut them open.

I quickly self assessed that I and frankly with due respect think that MOST people save another Surgeon have no idea how to in 10 minutes determine if the guy standing front of me is qualified. The fact I like or dislike someone has no bearing on their professional acumen. This place provides the quality assurance and consistency through approach and removes the variability of surgeon selection in my opinion.

So it is all about technique and surgeon and this place has the best collection of surgeons performing uniform technique with procedures served and growing daily. So I went for my appointment. My initial reaction was the grounds were nice but dated. The process was like being treated like cattle. The examining physician at first could not find my hernia. I was accepted and scheduled. I went for my labs.

So as I said I began to understand that I had a role to play in my recovery here and that being prepared made sense. So to that end and since my regular exercise routines did not jive with my hernia I started a regime of pushups, pullups and presses. My theory here was simple, as long as I felt the risk was low and the potential existed for it to help I did it. Bromelain a Pineapple derivative that is supposed to reduce inflammation. I resist the urge to point out that there is no signage, no direction and no chairs and that they if they cared could use narrow field of view LCD and privacy screens.

They apparently have no idea that a ticket system like at meat counter could make everyone more comfortable now serving number… -After 90 minutes Labs staff confirms my name and address and that the material they already have from my lab is correct and in hand -Time to be weighed and blood pressure checked.. Not a lot of conversation. Not a lot of warmth.

I am here because I need him to do a great technical job. This is where the experience changes. You have just passed from front office to back office. You meet the nurses, see the floor you are going to be staying on. Meet your fellow travellers on this journey. The nurses are great. They know what they are doing. Respect them, listen to them and your life will be easier.

This is also where the process really works. There are patients that were operated on hours before, patients whose operation was the day before or the day before that. Everyone is doing great. Your anxiety level drops immediately. The ones who have had it tell you that you are in good hands. They fill in the gaps in memory as to what is going to happen and what it is like. You hear it from the clients. You see their progress. We are free to wander that night. Dinner and snacks will be announced. We can leave for dinner outside the hospital if we want.

No eating or fluids after We will be called to the nursing station at 8: Yes there is one shower and it is down the hall. Yes the shaving is quick and no nonsense. With respect to the first shower you cannot shower after surgery the wound needs to be kept dry and so this is not a big deal and as others on the web have said this is not a problem and is designed to stop people from screwing up a nice incision. With respect to the shaving, get over it.

The antiseptic spray is a little cold. This is about being technically ready for that surgeon. This is not fine dining but it is better than regular hospital food. Think healthy diner type fair. Lunch was roast beef and vegetables and soup. I am to be ready for 8AM so I showered the night before. This is just about using antibacterial soap and reducing the chance of infection. You are offered a mild sleeping pill and that is a good choice given semi private and potential snoring and some hall noises.

This ward has some 16 beds and I see a lot of folks sleeping. I am given 3 Ativan and an Oxy and life suddenly seems very good. Next thing I remember I am on the table and some freezing is going in. I am semi lucid and then they are done. Next memory is waking up in bed. Actually to be accurate the nurse wakes me up.

Different folks in the days following have different memories: Some less, some more. No one has any problems or complaints. I am still under the influence of the drugs though. We are told to drink lots of water to flush things out. I feel no nausea. I can sit up and do so for the mandatory 20 minutes. Next step getting out of bed. This is amazingly easy. Then we begin to explore, tentatively at first and with increasing confidence we wander down the floor, go to the lounge, get back in bed.

The last surgeries are still in bed, the first are most mobile. We ask each other how we are doing. We are now members of the club. The next day we go down for breakfast. That day I traverse the 3 stories of stairs ten times and walk the halls. We know that moving early reduces the chances of long term pain.

They offer milk of magnesia and that is probably a good idea for most. Day after the surgery they remove half the 15 odd staples, the following day the rest. My surgeon has flexistrips placed afterward. Not all do that. I was going to do it myself if he did not as I plan to travel in ten days to Europe and be on my feet 8 hours a day for a week. Better safe than sorry. I start taking whey protein supplements with vitamin C and the rest of the mix I described on the day after Surgery supplemented by Lysine to help collagen formation. I do not share that with the staff.

Its my body and its my best assessment that providing ample building block materials gives me the best chance for fact recovery. I continue the supplements. Magnesium keeps things moving easily. I drink LOTS of water. Bruising and swelling is down noticeably in 24 hours. It is now day three after surgery. I am mobile, able to move fairly freely. I have not taken any pain meds and that was Ibuprofen only since last night. The incision looks good and should heal to a thin line. The ridge that was prominent when stapled is pretty minor right now.

I am having a little bit of front Thigh pain that is in my opinion minor and I am working that with massage and I expect that to diminish as swelling goes away but all Hernia repairs run a risk of nerve related pain. I am confident that this is transitional in my case.

Alan Beale's Core Vocabulary Compiled from 3 Small ESL Dictionaries (21877 Words)

I continue to stretch and increase my activity. I am doing Taekwondo forms in slow motion today. I met a number of folks who had mesh done elsewhere who were at Shouldice to deal with new hernia needs. Shouldice does a couple of complex surgeries a day. They were all doing well when I left. They tell you to plan on 4 nights but unless there is a reason after the staples are removed day 3 your surgeon will release you.

I did have the massage the day after surgery. This is to support lymphatic drainage. Some people report that this is so light as to be a waste of money. What I noticed was this. My muscles in the area of surgery were hard and in spasm as you would expect from the trauma. Post massage the area was noticeably less hard.

That cannot be bad. The therapist shared that a clinical retroactive study suggests a real benefit and that she is going to be speaking on the subject at conferences and sharing results in the coming months. Did I learn something? Yes to distinguish between what is really important in customer service and what is not. No one remembers the small annoyances in intake.

They remember the care where it counts in the Surgery and on the Floor. To address specific things I have read that are sometimes represented as negative on the web not in this blog:. This is about trusting an institution that is all about consistency and results. That is different than the pick an all star approach to life.

If you cannot get over that then this place is not for you. Maybe it is a Canadian thing but what can I say it works and the stories of clients are the main reason. Well from what I understand part of the Art of being a Shouldice trained surgeon is the minimization of that tension. The results seem to bear out that they do not have failure from tension, regardless of the theoretical risk. I am aware that the technique has been studied and copied and I cannot comment on the efficacy of those places, but this is the originator and the most experienced institution performing the technique.

I considered a US location that used laser scalpels and a synthetic vs stainless stitching but decided that they did not have the multi decade proof, though their arguments appeared rationale to me. Well they do have some standards. Frankly I do not fault them for asking patients to lose weight. I met quite a few from 30 to 65 years that did lose lbs to qualify and they are both proud and glad they did. They do not do high risk cases that should be in a general hospital with full care.

They do wade into complex third and fourth hernia situations where mesh has become a mess based on what I heard from other patients. Personally I was not there for the architecture or the interior decorating. It was comfortable, more than any place I have seen and the ability to walk the grounds with mature trees was nice on a sunny day in early April. What can I say? Last time I looked all hospital care and facility costs are higher than the local Marriott Courtyard, but these rooms are fine and the costs are not in my opinion obscene. SO take it with a grain of salt.

These are my opinions and my story. Do not take supplements without checking with your doctor. You I presume are on a journey to find what is right for you. Shouldice is, as I would tell my friends and sons and anyone I care about, certainly a place I would recommend. The staff was great, the doctor was awesome, the entire process was sooooo much better than we imagined! We stayed at a hotel in Vegas for 2 nights following the surgery. We kept frozen peas on the incision site, and made sure he had lots of fruits and vegetables.

His recovery has been fast and easy. His incision is about 4 inches long and is fading already. I definitely recommend Dr. Some people would not understand that. My local GP sent me to a local surgeon. The surgeon said all he does is mesh — and rattled off a long long list of possible complications. I thought oh yeah! A hospital that only does hernias — that sounded about right for me and all the people I met at Shouldice — mostly type A personalities that had done their research.

I have a friend that had mesh repair here in Vancouver some years ago — it has popped again. I have another friend had it done 20 years ago locally sewn up , marathons and ironmans later — all good. It was local anesthetic for him. Doctors office with wife waiting outside in car to take him home. I also have a friend with the right inguinal that had the best doctors in Singapore insurance job.

The recommendation to go to Shouldice came from my physiotherapist a cyclist I know well. My GP knew about Shouldice too. Everyone I met at Shouldice had done their research and were glad they were there. People were at varynig stages of their stay — from newbies just arrived to people leaving that day or next. All happy to share their experience. A day matters in the beginning because things get better fast. Had it for about 18mths before I got brave enough to have surgery on such a private area.

After all, they also cut the cremastic muscle that holds the testicles up somewhat. Last time I had surgery was over 40 years ago on a knee meniscus. About 30 people or so in my group — 4 of which were women with inguinal and belly button hernias. Like others — hoped it would go away but it got worse. I was constantly putting my hand down to my groin pushing it back in- looked a bit like a pervert I think. Wore a hernia belt if I had to do any lifting or anything arduous or long, such as a long walk.

I stopped jogging, although I could keep cycling without too much discomfort - km rides. Anyway, the Shouldice experience was very very good. Swelling, bruising a little and discomfort — normal. The worse for me is a hard ridge along the incision site that they say will take mths to go away. Prior to 2 weeks plan on taking it easy.

After 2 weeks will increase exercise, lifting and my activity level gradually. In the end, I think I over thought the whole thing. I expect a full recovery and expect all in my group to have the same — some were in really bad shape going in…. Probably take 6 weeks or more. Hope sharing my experience will help some of you…. Well done Ewen for putting this blog up on the internet.

I have an inguinal hernia and live in the USA. So, I will pay the cost myself. I do not know if this is Canadian or USA. My questions have mostly been answered by reading your reports, thanks. My one question that I need answered before I put my money down is the sedation before and during the surgery.

I want to be totally alert. I had prostrate surgery under a local and had no sedation. The surgeon here in the States was reluctant to the surgery that way, but it was best for all. The thought of not knowing what us going on is for me is not tolerable. Does one need to take the sedative pills before the surgery? My wife was a surgical nurse and has told me that pain medication such as OxyContin may help me get through the surgery but I say that the local should be enough to stop the pain, only the tugging and pulling should be left.

I hope someone can tell me I more detail about this. So I think your views are probably a bit to the side of a normal stat curve. As discussed in the blog elsewhere, in the waiting for surgery area, people were lying on the beds and most at some point fell asleep — I observed this. One guy there did not fall asleep as far as I know but most did. In surgery, I was wide awake, I could feel the tugging, going deeper and some sharp pin like pains and I was doing a running commentary for the surgeons.

At one point one of the nurses asked me to be please be quiet and let the surgeons do their job. After surgery I saw 2 doctors standing there at my side. I do remember afterwards seeing the guaze and tape on my right arm. My money, my show. Had my repair last month, no sedatives, I refused. I think that the person who talked too much, De Seta, may have been reacting to the sedatives adversely, consequently he ended up, according to his blog, with more sedation. Just ask for no sedation, if you want to be aware and awake, I did, and it was a much more enjoyable experience for everyone.

I just laid there and listened to my audio book. No pain during the surgery, the local takes care of that. To the point, extremely helpful! Wish I would have known about Shouldice specially being so close-living in Toronto earlier! And known about this blog! Thanks for the suggestions of Supplements! Hey, can you tell me how long did it take for you to sit on a chair for long hours?

I just got diagnosed and I am wondering how long I should be off work. Also how is the scar? Do you get any pain? So scared with the surgery stuff. Everyone in shouldice seem to serious.. You can sit up the next day, but there will be discomfort. Sitting for long hours might be something you consider at least a week after your surgery, although I recommend taking two weeks off of work. The scar takes a while to fade, but mine is barely noticeable now. The staff at Shouldice are kind of serious when you go for your initial examination but they are very professional, friendly and helpful when you stay for your procedure.

Thank you all for the great information. My doctor has recommended a mesh repair but I, like many on here, have read the failures associated with mesh. He said the shouldice repair was old and better options are available today. I have found very few poor reviews about a Shouldice repair. I am very seriously considering the trip to Shouldice from Texas.

I do have a vacation scheduled in early August and was wondering if 6 weeks post op is too short on time to be active during the vacation. Also Shouldice states in their web information that they work with American insurance companies. Does anyone know how that works? Again, thank you for your words of experience. A lot of doctors will recommend the mesh repair, even though it has the most complications. Also, they require you to spend time in the hospital for recovery after the procedure. From what I understand, you are out of hospital the same day with the mesh surgery.

Thinking of getting my surgery done at shouldice soon. I have really bad anxiety about surgery and what not do they offer more sedation? To help people in my situation? Different people respond differently to the sedation. I was out the the whole time but another person I know was semiconscious the whole time and singing during the surgery.

I would speak to the doctor upon your examination about your apprehensions. My surgery was totally successful, I drove most of the mile return trip home 4 days after my second surgery, went skiing 3 weeks after with minimal discomfort, so 6 weeks should be enough time barring any complications and of course YMMV Your Mileage May Vary. Now I feel totally restored, lift heavy objects, engage in various strenuous athletic and work activities without problems, though once in awhile I will feel a very slight feeling of strain, but that can happen to someone who has no history of hernias at all.

Another factor is that laparscopy is way more dangerous, even though still relatively safe, but there have been fatalities associated with it due to intestinal damage: A lot depends on your particular insurer, their coverage for international etc. And double check everything with Shouldice as they submit etc. Shouldice also provides the services of someone in America to help navigate through the insurance maze.

My husband and I flew out so he could have his hernia repaired. Each of the doctors was patient, and invited me to partake in the process and ask questions as well. They really were as funny and nice as everyone above has already mentioned, but I unfortunately I cannot say the same for some of the nurses.

My husband was given three different sets of instructions by three different nurses before the surgery, none of which was mentioned before we arrived. His roommate was even chuckling about how he was first told not to shower for a week, then the next nurse said days, then the doctor said once he got home day 3 , just be careful not to get it wet. The nurses will also give you a pamphlet with instructions and information on it, then chastise you when you do something — as instructed on the pamphlet. All of this would be fine and mildly amusing, but some not all of the nurses were blatantly rude and snippy about it.

Noting that I myself was not a patient and therefore the above might not bother actual patients , my main complaint is that I was treated incredibly poorly when I asked where I should sit to wait for my husband to come out of surgery. They did NOT tell us there were limited visiting hours before I booked a week off of work and flew across the country to support my husband.

I politely and quietly asked where I should situate myself during the hours of waiting post-surgery, and the response I got? She just winked and reiterated to me that visiting hours were and , but that nobody would notice if I was sitting quietly in a corner with the curtain drawn during the 4 hours that my husband was laying down post-surgery.

She also said we could meet in the common areas or on the grounds at any time, as long as he was in his room when needed to meet with the doctor, or to do that silly exercise class. It is a great clinic with fantastic doctors and I do recommend it, but beware the nurses. Wondering if you saw many women there getting a hernia repaired? Also, wondering if there was an option to have family stay with you?

The whole process seems so isolating and frightening. Was there regular visiting hours? You only mentioned a 2 hours span that your mother was there nearing the end of your stay…. I definitely saw many more men than women there, although there were some. Family cannot stay at the hospital, but there are hotels relatively close by.

See a Problem?

I found the staff and other patients there very friendly and engaging if I chose to be engaging myself. My first roommate, Dave, was a great guy and we still email each other sometimes to catch up. My second roommate, although polite, chose to mainly keep to himself. I looked at it as a forced vacation. Just as anything in life, it depends how you approach it. I would do it again in a second if my hernia reoccurred, but I highly doubt that will happen.

There were actually a fair number of women when I was there last December. Of course a lot of the conversation is about the procedures and how everyone feels but I found that comforting and in many ways fascinating to compare notes with others. Hi there and thank you for starting and taking the time to maintain this blog. I have had a right side inguinal hernia for 4 years. I have chosen to just watch and wait because it was pretty much asymptomatic.

He said locally that most doctors perform laparoscopic or open mesh surgery. I got a bit nauseated at the thought of a foreign and degrading medical device being installed in my abdomen. I heard about Shouldice and found your blog and I feel more reassured now, so thank you. If anybody with longer term Shouldice surgery could also share their story.

Congratulations on soon becoming a father! I went through the same research and apprehensions regarding the mesh surgery.

I wanted to make sure that other people are well-informed before they go to Shouldice and are reassured that they will be able to go back to their regular way of life again. In fact, my life is better now because, just as you have been doing, I put up with my hernia for about 3 years before considering surgery. I no longer have to worry about the pain and discomfort. I just ran into my roommate from Shouldice last weekend as well and he is feeling just as good as I am. Sleep easy, my friend! Thanks you for the speedy reply. I have one more question of you.

My hernia has pretty much been asymptomatic for years except for a large grape sized lump. The other side presented itself maybe a few months ago and it was also asymptomatic. Is this dull pain normal for inguinal hernias in your experience? My Doctor says yes. We had planned on taking my husband to shouldice because of that repair method, but we live in California. Kevin Petersen in Las Vegas. He uses the same method. My husband had surgery there NO mesh!! I had a repair done at Shouldice last Feb.

It was a right inguinal. Prior to my surgery I had a pulling zapping like pain as well as a gurgling sensation in my groin. I am now having that gurgling sensation again down in my right groin, but I do not have any pain. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

My doc says that I have a positive cough impulse and she thinks it may be a recurrence, but there is no visible bulge like before. Just seeing if anyone on here has any experience with anything like this. Who was your surgeon? I just had surgery at Shouldice and I am beginning to come to the realization that the experience and results vary greatly depending on which surgeon performed the procedure on you.

This blog help me out with a homework that i have to do about the services plan of Shouldice.. Hopefully your still following it.. To the guy from Vancouver.. How did you tolerate the 5 hour flight back home? Hi, I see this blog is winding down but thanks for the input. I had a left inguinal hernia repair at Kaiser Hospital in Southern California last year and it was a full open with mesh. The surgery was ok but I had post surgical complications and of course had been sent home hours after being cut open.

I am considering Shouldice because in the US you get kicked out the door to fend for yourself immediately after surgery. I have had 40 years experience in medicine as a pharmacist and an acupuncuturist and finally figured out I must have been in electrolyte imbalance and was able to slow my heart and thwart the panic mode with Emergen-C which contains electrolytes.

Finally got that going with hot compresses of Spirits of Turpentine followed by Milk of Magnesia and prune juice together…. I am willing to travel miles to get some real care. BTW I forgot to mention…. I have now developed an inguinal hernia on the right side! Thus the interest in pursuing the Shouldice option now…. I agree that Shouldice is the best. They treated me the out most respect and care. Every step of the way was explained and they made my stay a breeze.

I would like to ask how well is your incision healing after 4 weeks. My area is still sore and is still swollen. I would like your progress after the same time period. I wrote last September when I first started researching about the Shouldice method of hernia repairs. When I read all of the negative print about repairing them laprascopically with a patch I was extremely concerned.

As a BC resident, I also found out that the patch is the only type of operation that they do in hospitals in BC. You may also not get the same Doctor performing your surgery as the one who consulted with you. The final straw was that they said the waiting list was one year unless it strangulated. This blog alleviated my concerns when I began to investigate Shouldice more. This blog and further comments have written about the Shouldice experience extensively.

My experience was pretty much exactly like this. I had a double Inguinal — the first one on Feb 4th and the second on Feb 6th. I was mostly awake for the first and wide awake for the second. I was little nervous waiting for the drug cocktail to take effect on the first, but that was it. It made me completely relaxed. In the surgery itself, I think I remember them giving me a little extra something intravenously. The surgery itself took some time — over half an hour. It obviously required some force because my body was moving around quite a bit.

During the second I even made a few jokes with the Doctors. I fell asleep after my first and woke up a few hours later in my bed. It took about 4 hours to recuperate enough to slowly get up out of bed. I was groggy, but I felt OK. I got up and walked around the hallway slowly. The nurse said that I should keep moving slowly, but also rest. I thought I felt really good considering I just had fairly major surgery. The next day, I was a little more sore and it took a big effort to get out of bed.

The Doctor came by and said my incision looked good. The wound looked pretty gruesome, but I had seen the pictures on this blog and I was prepared. My roommate had a single the same day as I had mine and could not get out of bed. He asked for some pretty heavy pain killers and I was only taking Advil. I had my second. About 5 hours later, I tried to get out of bed but was a lot sorer than after the first. It was tough to walk, but I did it anyway.

The pain was quite a bit worse but I tried to push through it. Coughing or sneezing was excruciating then but funny now in hindsight. I was still only taking Advil. The next day I had a sponge bath in the morning. When I saw the damage, I was mortified. My entire groin from my hips to mid thighs was black and blue. My balls were black and swollen.

I was a little scared. The doctor came by and examined me and said that everything looked good.

Week of Surgery and Hospitalization

Having 2 done was exponentially more painful than the first. The next couple of days a Shouldice I was really sore but getting ready to leave. The flight back to Vancouver was long and painful as sitting was the worst. Once home, I continued to feel terrible sitting down in a chair for more than 10 minutes at a time. Lying down or standing was the best.

Repairing Hernias

Eating certain foods made me feel worse especially ones that produced gas. I walked everyday — slowly at first but often. I also stretched for 10 minutes twice a day. Within 5 days, I was walking over 2 miles faster that most people. The doctor was right, after 10 days my bruising and swelling was almost gone.

The only part left was large ridges the length of my two — 4 inch incisions. It looked like they had left felt markers underneath my skin during the surgery. I was able to return to my day to day life after 2 weeks, but was still not lifting anything heavy or exercising other than walking. After a month, I returned to the gym.

I also had a 4 month absence from exercising before my surgery, due to bad hernia pain, pain in my testicles and fear of strangulation. When I finally returned, my body was weak. I started using the elliptical machine for about 10 minutes. Now I concentrate more on form and do more repetitions with less weight than I used to. I do get the occasional strange pain which feels more like a pulled muscle. It always originates from the areas where they stretched the muscles during the surgery. I never get pain like I experienced with my hernias or in those locations.

From what I have heard, it takes about a year to completely go down. The incisions themselves are not very noticeable and mostly covered up by my newly appreciated hair. I could not have sex before my surgery because of the pain afterwards. Now, there is no problem what so ever. I was fully recovered in that department, one week after surgery.

I guess the Ontario Government covers it completely for Ontario residents. After a bit of an argument which I lost , they said that in BC they would have done both of the surgeries at the same time, reducing the costs of surgical time, assistants and the Doctor. It was more expensive than having it done locally and the recovery time was much longer than the alternative. Thank you so much for sharing! Just to let you know about the plane ride from Pearson to YVR. I made sure that I had an aisle seat. That way I could stand up in the aisle for a lot of the time. I was lucky that it was a smooth flight and that it was on time.

I also took a couple of Advils about an hour before I got on the flight and another couple about 3 hours into it. I got a ride to the airport from a friend I made at Shouldice. Anyway, I worried more about it than how bad it actually was. But, I was glad to get home, see my family after a week, sleep in a comfortable bed and eat some good food. Also, I am able to do whatever activities I choose to do now. I regularly do burpees, squats, pushups, situps, pullups, deadlifts, running, etc.

Shouldice really was the right place to go for my surgery, which is why I wanted to share my experience during and afterwards through this blog. Take care and feel free to post updates on your progress. I was having nightmares back in September because I got diagnosed with having to have hernia surgery a week after we found out we were expecting.

I was having sleepless nights thinking that I would be too weak to play with him. Take care and keep in touch. The average doctor at Shouldice performs hundreds of hernia surgeries a year and is highly trained.
