All children under 13 years of age in or on vessels under 26 feet in length must wear a U. Coast Guard approved wearable PFD while underway. Underway means not at anchor, made fast to the shore, or aground. A Type V PFD is acceptable only if used in accordance with the specific instructions on the label of the device.

Qualification & Currency

Inflatable PFDs are authorized only when used in accordance with requirements as presented on U. Coast Guard approval labels.

What if I Don't Pass?

Inflatable PFDs are not approved for use on personal watercraft, waterskiing, or other high speed activity. Sound Producing Devices Any motorboat less than 12 meters in length Motorboats 12 meters or more in length are required to carry a whistle or horn, and a bell.

Vessel Examiner's Job Aid Kit

Lights Required All vessels including motorboats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, punts, rowboats, rubber rafts, or other vessels when not at dock must have and exhibit at least one bright light, lantern or flashlight visible all around the horizon from sunset to sunrise in all weather and during restricted visibility. Power Driven Vessels Underway: Power driven vessels of less than 20 meters Explain the VSC and politely direct them to the examination area. When greeting the boater, do NOT lean on their truck.

Vessel Safety Check (Examination/Inspection)

The VSC is an examination-not and inspection! Look at the driver and the female in the passenger seat in the eye especially when children are present when discussing safety. Do not stand on the boat trailer to look in vessel unless you ask.

Do not put your clipboard or lean on the boat Answer questions truthfully and be prepared to substantiate the answer. It is better to not know than to guess or lie. Know your local state boating regulations and Federal Requirements booklets.

Limit the examination to minutes for trailer boaters to 30 minutes for large vessels. Do not discuss any prior VSC activity with other examiners when other boaters are in the area.

Website and Flotilla Meeting. Clipboards come in many styles and price ranges. Clipboards should have at least one storage compartment to hold spare forms, decals, etc. There may be a charge for materials and shipping and handling.
