While in the Guild, Ciardis discovers that she hails from a nearly extinct family of mages with great powers. The Prince of the land comes seeking her help - to revive an ancient pact. While helping the Prince in secret and going along with her mage activities to secure a Patron in the Hunt, Ciardis becomes a major piece into play at the Court. While I loved the fantasy elements and the whole mage thing, I was a bit dissatisfied with the overload of information in the first 5 or 6 chapters. While it was good to know about her heritage, it wasn't explained how she came to be in the village alone - apparently the memory ball showed the memories of all of her ancestors but she still doesn't see what happened to her parents?
The chemistry between the Prince and Ciardis is non-existent - he is younger than her, admires her beauty and power, while all she does is scream at him in her defense, he is kind of useless. The only character I liked was Ciardis - even the Prince doesn't seem that charming but maybe in the next book? I really hope any love interest for her be better than him. So while the characters really didn't endear me, the plot and story development did. The writing was articulate, and developments went smoothly.
At times I was lost with a few sentences, but considering it's a review galley, I suppose some editing was remaining. As far as the book is concerned, it is a to-read. Along the way she discovers a conspiracy to unseat the Prince of her land from his position, a powerful magic that she is due to inherit, and unexpected friendships. It doesn't sound like much when I say it like that, but this book is wonderful, truly. Ciardis is a very authentic character - she's emotional, she's strong, she's caring and kind and willing to help just about anyone. And more than anything else, I think, she wants what is best for herself and isn't afraid to make her own future.
I like her a lot, and I never expected to. My favourite thing about Sworn to Raise is how the magic and abilities are all tied up in the politics of the realm. I love the subterfuge and the building dissent, and I look forward to seeing how Ciardis and the Prince will deal with this in future books.

I would have thought that she would have grown some skin having had grown up alone and mistreated in her old town. Sworn to Raise is paced well suited for all ages a little frustrating at times but still a good read. I recommend this story for Teens and the younger YA. I will read the second book to see how it continues. Not a bad cliffhanger I dislike those but still would like to see where the relationship will head as well as the kingdoms future. That's my feelings on this book. In Twilight, Bella has 0 superpowers and 0 personality. Somehow our main character I've actually forgotten her name already. Not that likability is the point of storytelling- but you're supposed to like this girl. I think you're supposed to pity her because people think she's oh so low. But I ended up not having sympathy because any difficulty she had was quickly plot explained away can't read? Here, have a magic ability character that can give gifts like reading away! Most require magic powers.
But instead of their powers they learn how to dance and speak and manage their patron's affairs like a housekeeper. They're bought and kept. And there was a strange competition going on sending them all into a maze taken straight out of Harry Potter and TGOF which pitted them against one another when they all had different vying patrons so were not competing? All in all I forced myself to finish it in case there was an excellent plot twist like the White Walkers coming down from the north and destroying everyone in their wake Sep 02, Verity Brown rated it it was ok. More of a 2.
Aside from some missing words here and there, the grammar and editing were competent enough not to bother me. And the story certainly wasn't hard to continue reading--the ideas behind the story were actually pretty engaging. But the plotline was depressingly lacking in tension until very near the end. Everything always turns out right for Ciardis. Not in a painfully Mary-Sue way thank goodness!
And although Ciardis doesn't strike me as a Mary-Sue, the long, dull series of things she experiences feel more like a list of wish-fulfilling daydreams recorded by the author than a well-constructed plot. At various points, the resemblance to similar events and characters in The Hunger Games and Harry Potter really jumped out.
I'm still debating whether to go on with the series. I'm intrigued by where this story might go, but I don't want to spend money on another book to discover that it's just more of the same. Oh, and what is Ciardis or is it Sebastian? I have a terrible suspicion that the author may really have meant "rise" that is, rise in position from where the character started, which Ciardis does. In which case I can only facepalm and shake my head.

I enjoyed the fact that from the moment we meet Ciardis she is not meek, or even perfect; she has many flaws and is constantly in trouble, but she is witty, loyal and caring; attributes all readers can identify with. Throughout this story the reader watches as the Companion's Guild attempts to mould Ciardis into their idea of 'perfection,' whilst she develops into a young woman, but retains her own identity.
Her friendship with Sebastian is central to this first book, not only is he one of her Patrons but also one of the reasons she finds herself in trouble. When they first meet she dismisses him as a young boy and he requires her help, but quickly they progress to enjoying each other's company. Sworn to Raise is a book with magic, fantasy, mystery, murder, betrayal and perhaps a little hint at romance. What more could any reader ask for??
Apr 16, Jo rated it really liked it Shelves: I devoured this in one day. I have two papers to write, but this book sucked me in. And, of course, now I have to read the second and third one. It wasn't a perfect book. There were a few typos and grammar problems, but this book has heart. It has the spark that makes a good book, and the imagination to fuel it. I would have liked to see the book expanded. The relationships felt rushed, and since the book wasn't that long, it wouldn't have hurt to add in a little more depth.
Also, the curse word I devoured this in one day. Also, the curse words seemed forced rather than necessary. I loved the character of Sebastian - a worthless heir to the throne who is younger than the heroine - really well done. He carried off the right amount of presumption because he is the heir with a dose of humility since he is seemingly powerless.

The distancing is noticeable to the rest of the court, and raises questions as to whether Ciardis will actually become the Companion to the prince. While plagued with doubt in her path, Ciardis must dodge assassins, navigate court intrigue, and somehow find out who is behind the killing of magical creatures called the kith.
Overall I would give the book a rating of 4. The story is as interesting as the first book and the reader is introduced to other races that occupy this world. The book starts off a little slow for my taste, with Ciardis feeling really insecure about her position in court. Once the action begins, events happen one after another and the book ends in, literally, the least likely of places.

But we also got to see a whole new part of this world, the Ameles Forest which was completely different than the city.
From the very beginning Ciardis comes across new adventures and battles, not only with her enemies but also with her friends and herself. So there are still many plot twists but everything feels right and falls into place. This is why I was far more drawn into this book than I was into the first one. But at times I still felt a little bit lost, some parts I needed to read twice to understand what was going on.
But all in all everything did happen smooth and fluid. Ciardis did improve in comparison to the first book. She knew how to control herself and listened to advice when needed or helpful. At the same time she was still her old self, stubborn, impulsive and determined. Her talents are still a bit unstable in this book, which made it better you can see her make process step by step and you can see how determined she is to learn everything. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves YA-fantasy.
The Ameles Forest lies unprotected and it's inhabitants are dying. With enemies closing ranks in Sandrin, Ciardis can little afford to leav Amazon's blurb: With enemies closing ranks in Sandrin, Ciardis can little afford to leave the city's nest of vipers to take on a new task. To keep the Companions' Guild happy and the favor of the Imperial Court, Ciardis will be tested in frightening new ways, especially when she's faced with an obstacle that could risk the lives of her friends and the family she never thought she had.
I enjoyed the first book in the series a lot, and this one did not disappoint as so many second books in series often do. Ciardis grows as a character, but still you can see glimpses of the girl she used to be when she upsets the apple cart more than once.. There are believable characters, exciting mini plots that happen all through the book, and an unexpected twist for the ending. The pacing was fast, and I am definitely looking forward to the next! The story was much better this time for me. I read through them several times to see if I missed something, but I could never find anything that those scenes added to the story other than word count. I learned a bit more about the characters in this novel, and they began to take more shape as real people, but, at the same time, they kept contradicting themselves both in this novel and from things they did in the first novel.
There were several instances where Ciardis did something or put herself in a situation that a real person with her same attributes and characteristics would have never done. Acting out of character, so to speak. The story is there, though, and it shows promise. It was a bit of a tough read if you notice every grammar issue or could not find the author's writing rhythm, but the story can and will entertain you if you can look past those major issues.

It was full of scenes that seemed random and pointless and contrived. The characters seemed to change personalities repeatedly.
It felt emotionally distant and rushed. I think what bothered me the most was the random one or two paragraph point of view changes. It came across as a lack of ability to develop the story. The purpose of these point of view changes seemed to be to clue the reader into some important tidbit quickly without putting the effort into plotting the story so the main character can discover the info some realistic way. The other thing that bothered me was how the "very busy" characters were repeatedly referenced as having spent much time learning random info in the past few months that just happened to be the info needed to solve the mystery.
