A House in the High Hills: Dreams and Disasters of Life in a Spanish Farmhouse
I have just read this book for the second time. I loved it again. Apr 15, Jeremy Butterfield rated it really liked it. I picked this up from the library while searching for books about Spain.
It's set in Mallorca, and is about Selina Scott's experiences there in a vaguely defined period straddling The main threads of the book are how she improves the old farmhouse she has bought, and how she rescues a particularly maltreated dog. Along the way, she describes the local landscape and her local village and its characters so that you can almost see them.
She seems to have been there at a time of rapid changes, I picked this up from the library while searching for books about Spain. She seems to have been there at a time of rapid changes, when wealthy foreigners started arriving; it's interesting to see how she describes the old coexisting with the new.
And then there are her journalistic exploits, recounted with modesty, but interesting all the same. Her eye for detail, and her almost lyrical descriptions of nature and wildlife set it apart from many other "we moved and abroad and this is what happened" books.

Well worth a read for a bit of undemanding but charming escapism. The only downside for me, as an editor and writer, was the eccentric, in not bizarre, punctuation. For example, commas seemed to be rationed, and, when they did appear, were often wrong. Her publisher evidently doesn't believe in getting books copy-edited. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Some identifying marks on the inside cover, but this is minimal. Very little wear and tear.
