This morning, Thierry Michel sent in a link to the "soundtrack opening and theme" from the TV Movie Maigret Sets A Trap , which he describes as "a french-sounding song that actually makes no sense in french, something that was called 'yaourt' back in the 60s when french singers did the same with English you wrote a few posts on that already on LL ":. The IMDb page for the movie says that the music is by Samuel Sim , but offers no details about the song or the singer. The theme music is also available on Sim's Soundcloud page , and a comment indicates that the singer is Tracy Kashi , but requests for the lyrics in the comments go unanswered.

There are two great Maigret adaptations available online or in DVDs from the s, the British version done by Granada for two seasons in , starring Michael Gambon, and the Dune French version that lasted from until with Bruno Cremer. Both have strong qualities, although in many ways they are completely opposite. Gambon's Maigret is affable, poetic, emotional, sympathetic, and works in close concert with his men; his Paris Budapest is sunny and bright.

Cremer's Maigret is taciturn and intense, preferring to wait silently while people reveal themselves, riding his men hard at times, especially the often incompetent officers he encounters outside of Paris; and his Paris Prague is always gray or pitch black, dark wet streets, his pipe glowing.
In many ways the visual look of the shows are opposite, with the British series relying more on the romance and nostalgia of Paris, while the French series is a showcase for the dark psychological mysteries of Simenon.

The French series hews more closely to the original stories, and also has the advantage of the episodes being 30 minutes longer; it is also a more complete canon, with nearly 5 times as many stories. In the Gambon series, Gambon is more pleasant, his men work with him as a clever team, and we see much more of Mme.

Maigret, who appears in nearly every episode, but the humor and the characterizations are typically British, which can be somewhat disconcerting. The Cremer Maigret varies in quality with the directors, but he is almost always brilliant, playing his hunches and guiding his investigations with a deep psychology that truly honors the original Simenon novels. And it goes almost without saying, the French version pulls no punches and has a much darker way of exploring aspects of the French character that the heart of Simenon; Cremer spends a lot of time listening to people and asks questions which seem strange but reveal hidden truths.
Maigret is described as a large, broad shouldered man — he is gruff, but patient and fair. Recurring characters in the series include Maigret's wife Louise usually referred to simply as Madame Maigret and in particular "The Faithful Four", a group consisting of his four loyal police colleagues Sgt.

The cinematic potential of Maigret was realized quickly: In France, Jean Gabin played the part in three films, released in , , and There have been numerous incarnations of Maigret on the small screen all around the world. The Italian actor Gino Cervi played the character on Italian television, starting from up to ; Simenon himself considered Cervi's interpretation of the character to be possibly the best.
Megure's wife was played by Etsuko Ichihara , who earned the praises of Simenon himself: She was exactly right".
Davies took over the part after Basil Sydney , who appeared as Maigret in the original transmitted pilot, proved unavailable owing to ill-health. His portrayal won two of the highest accolades: The theme tune to the TV series was composed by Ron Grainer. Granada Television produced an adaptation of Maigret for ITV in and in which Michael Gambon starred as Maigret; there were 12 adaptations in the two series. An earlier version on ITV cast Richard Harris in the lead role, with a somewhat idiosyncratic reading of the character.
Two further episodes were broadcast in , adapted from Maigret at the Crossroads and Inspector Maigret and the Strangled Stripper. The format of each play would begin with Maigret and Simenon sitting together discussing some fact or event which would then lead into Maigret's recounting a particular case, with Simenon asking questions or commenting from time to time. After Denham's death, the series was continued in with Nicholas Le Prevost playing a gruffer, more earthy Maigret and Julian Barnes playing Simenon.
Jacques Blondeau adapted the novels into the comic series Maigret —53 , published in Samedi Soir and Paris Journal. Between and the series Maigret inspired five albums, drawn by Philippe Wurm and Frank Brichau.
