Wow, what a terrific book by the wonderful Victorian novelist known as "Pansy"!! I love the characters and can't wait to start reading the sequel! Marjorie, the heroine, is a spunky, willful young woman who comes to know the reality of Christ's in dwelling in a particularly painful, but important way.
The character of Ralph is one of the most interesting in the Pansy universe--fully realized as a character study of a man given over completely to his emotions and impulse. There are many likeable characters in this book.

Glyde and her visit with Mr. Andrews was described such that I felt I had been there myself.

Marjorie certainly did not continue her relationship with Ralph, and that's a good thing. Her fate lies in the strength and comfort of the Lord and will not be disappointed. This is a Christian book seemingly written for readers to understand how to be better Christians and how to avoid falling away from grace. I think the contrast between those who give themselves to Jesus Christ and those who do not want to be true Christians at all is very well done, very insightful.
If you like Grace Livingston Hill books you will also love these. I like to read the older books and imagine life back then. Especially their spirituality and their interpretation of the word of God. I am so glad that I discovered the Alden books. It was quite by mistake! Get to Know Us.
