Patrick Dircks, a seventh-grader at John F. Prior to the competition on Jan. Officiated by Principal Kevin Fullerton, 33 finalists in Grades gathered in the auditorium to answer questions covering multiple facets of U. Patrick will join students from across the country in taking an online written test as part of the next round of the 30th annual National Geographic Bee. The top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state bee.
The state winners will advance to the national championship rounds in Washington, D. The district wishes Patrick much success as he continues in the competition. It is a unicycle program run by Bethpage residents, Mr. The morning began with bagels and water courtesy of the Cohen family.
The student participants and chaperones were introduced to the tight rope to practice balance. They experienced the patented trainers for the unicycle to practice peddling and turning. Then, they experienced the mini-cycles for balance. Each participant was given their own 20" unicycle for 90 minutes to try riding it! Every student persevered and never gave up! Special thanks to the Cohen family and Mrs. McKweon for chaperoning this unique event!
Bethpage High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School students that attended this trip had a rare treat! Two of the light keepers retired Navy engineers were onsite and gave the students a tour of not only the lighthouse, but also the basement and actual lens house. In the basement, the engineers explained how they rigged all of the automated systems that regulate both the interval and rotation of the twin spotlights.
Up in the lens house, the keepers demonstrated how they maintain the electrical systems that keep the light operating smoothly. The top of this structure provided clear, breathtaking views of Fire Island. The students were shown how shipwrecked passengers were rescued in the old days utilizing a makeshift pulley system, delivered by cannon! They also learned how a Fresnel lens amplified an oil lamp into a beam that could shine out into the ocean.
This technology was state-of-the-art prior to electric lights. The four ton, first order Fresnel lens was recovered from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and is now proudly on display in its own building. Carroll for organizing this great experience! On Saturday, January 13, , students from John F. Each student received their own personalized chef hat before preparing their own meatballs and salad. Students got a behind-the-scenes tour of the restaurant and had the opportunity to ask questions.
Afterwards, students got to eat lunch which included pasta, salad and two meatballs which they prepared earlier , and gelato for dessert! At the end of the session, each student received a personalized certificate commemorating their successful completion of the Junior Chef Academy! Topics included recipe recommendations, kitchen safety, kitchen equipment, common abbreviations, and vocabulary. The students had a great time with this challenge! In this activity, students created individual chocolates and decorated cupcakes based on the theme of winter and Valentine's Day. During the weekly broadcast, the student anchors lead the student body in the Pledge of Allegiance, share news about upcoming events, promote character education traits, play a trivia game, and spotlight happenings in classrooms around the building. The second anniversary episode featured Superintendent of Schools Mr. Clark visiting to renew the morning show's contract for another year and opened the voting of the building's annual Ugly Sweater Contest.

From October 26, through November 1, , students could purchase raffle tickets during their lunch periods to join the badminton tournament. At the end of the purchasing period, those with winning tickets could ask a John F.

On the day of the tournament, a total of 23 participants, dressed in matching uniforms, enjoyed an afternoon of friendly competition, exercise, and community involvement. On Thursday, November 16, , Mrs. Mulholland's Grade 6 math class learned about some of the math required in movie editing.
The class has been discussing ratios and percents. During the lesson, the students watched clips from Moana, The Secret Life of Pets, and other animated films. They spoke about the percent of time various sections of the clip compared to the entire scene. The students left class with a great appreciation of the wonderful applications of mathematics.
Raynham Hall Museum Visit. This old colonial home is rich in Revolutionary War history and is reputed to be the place where the first Valentine's Day poem was written in the United States! There are ties to the Washington Spy Ring featured in the recent AMC television series, "Turn," and the house gives more detailed sense of what life was like during the Colonial Era. A visit here will give you more information about American History than you might obtain in one of the more well known museums!
Soaring Eagles Day at John F. Kennedy Middle School students participated in Soaring Eagles Day, an annual character education program at the school on Monday, October 23, Kicking off the day, students in Grades attended two assemblies, "Everyday Hero" by Chris Poulos and "Creating the Champion Within" by Molly Kennedy, where they learned about positive mindset thinking, perseverance, self-discipline, and responsibility.
Following, teachers administered a variety of classroom lessons, during which students shared their reactions to the assemblies, played team building games, and wrote inspirational messages to athletes of the Special Olympics, which the district will host in May. The day concluded with a pep rally in the gymnasium, where the students cheered for and applauded the middle school's athletic teams. Fall Castaway Sand Art. Students at John F. Kennedy Middle School met with Ms. Klein to participate in their seasonal sand art activity. Students exhibited creativity in crafting their designs.

Weekly "Book Talks" are happening at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Mrs. Maloney's Grade 7 English class. As part of their ORB outside reading book project, students present their books to the class and explain the plot, characters, and events in their book. Every week at "Book Talk", students update the class on what they have read. Students enjoy hearing about new books from their classmates! And as with every good "Book Talk", snacks and beverages are served! Save the Baby Eagle. Grade 6 students recently visited the John F. Kennedy Library Media Center with their literature workshop teachers, Ms.
Students were shown a video from a "birdnapper" who had stolen the library mascot eagle's baby. The students were charged with solving clues and puzzles in order to gain access to a locked box and the final hint which would allow for the baby's rescue. The activities all centered on information intended to familiarize students with the library media center like reading a map of the room and finding books on the shelves.

After being nominated by Ms. Green in seventh grade, Santina participated in the exclusive summer program for middle school and high school students representing all fifty states and several countries! The program, which focuses on leadership development, community service, global awareness, and college preparation, provided Santina with a comprehensive and interactive learning experience that introduced her to new friends and provided strategies for becoming a more active and engaged member of the Bethpage community.
During the Summit, Santina created a community action plan that focused on partnering with the Long Island Cares Foundation as a way to bridge the gap between needy families and school sports teams in Bethpage. Congratulations to Santina for participating in the program!
Kennedy Art Club created beautiful literary inspired bookends to brighten up the Library Media Center. Taking inspiration from literacy classics and current favorites, the students painted bookends representing different books. Students from across the district were the guests of the Metropolitan Opera Company at Lincoln Center on Thursday, April 20, , as part of their participation in the 21st Century Activity: HD Live in Schools. The students were met by Education Department and trip organizer, Dan Marshall and two opera house tour guides. The students, accompanied by their teacher chaperones Mrs. They were able to view a few minutes of a rehearsal happening on the huge stage of the 3, seat opera house and learned about the almost perfect acoustical properties of the house.
They also saw the beautiful crystal chandeliers that hang in the lobby and theater, which were a gift from the Australian government for our country's assistance in World War II. They were then taken by elevator to several different floors underground, where they observed the costume shop, wig-makers, special effects machinery, scenery and lighting production, as well as props and paining.
In addition, we visited rehearsal studios and learned about the children's chorus and their assigned dressing rooms. They also loved seeing the doors and the animals come through, when used in productions! Our guides were very knowledgeable and answered many questions. As we passed through the various underground tunnels, we even caught a glimpse of internationally known opera star Placido Domingo in a rehearsal. At the conclusion of our tour, we were taken into The Belmont Room, where we met Bethpage High School graduate Matt Rubin, the current assistant lighting director at the Met.
He hold us about his path to his current career and how he often did work in technology during his high school years in Bethpage. A graduate of Hofstra University, he has traveled extensively and worked his way up to his current position. The students and teachers were able to ask him questions and pose for photographs.
Following a delicious lunch in the Lincoln Square area, the students boarded the bus for the trip home filled with information about this American Arts institution and looking forward to future opera experiences! The humorous fable of an Italian Jewish family during the Holocaust swept and captivated the students' attention through humor and tragedy. The restaurant, La Famiglia, served a variety of traditional dishes.
Students were grateful for having the opportunity to experience the Italian culture through cinema and cuisine. Samar Singh recited 57 digits of pi. After the contest, we all had a lot of fun finding where our birth date occurs in the digits of pi. A fun time was had by all of the participants! Kennedy engaged in a month-long "Astronauts and Space" unit in their ENL class and were able to complete that unit with the "Living in Space" workshop at the museum. Students were able to showcase their knowledge at the museum and impressed the Cradle of Aviation group leader! In addition to learning about living in space in a workshop, students were able to sit in a space shuttle seat, look at space food, touch an authentic spacesuit, and best of all - try on a space helmet! Kennedy Middle School visited students at Kramer Lane Elementary School to participate in delivering their annual anti-bullying message. The lesson included an activity and tips on how to prevent bullying behaviors. All of the students were engaged and appreciative! During the lunch periods in the library, students were able to make a truffala tree from Dr.
Seuss', The Lorax , review books using only emojis, color their own bookmarks, fold a book fortune teller, and win prizes. The students had fun celebrating reading as well as Dr. On Monday, February 27, , a group of John F. Okita to learn about creating a budget. Each student was given a career and monthly income at random. Through an interactive lesson, students made financial decisions in terms of housing, transportation, clothing, food, and entertainment, while taking into consideration the monthly income that they were given.
Students were surprised by all the associated costs and how intricate creating a budget can be. The group had a great time and most importantly learned life lessons about making smart choices when it comes to finances. They helped some of the residents play Bingo and enjoyed calling the numbers. Finally, they handed out hand-made Valentine's Day cards, which were happily received by the residents. This was a great experience for the Middle School students involved!
On Saturday, February 4, , John F. Schools from all over Long Island competed. Mathcounts is a national mathematics enrichment program for middle school students. The competitors from John F. The theme for this session was edible Valentine's Day treats that compliment a cup of hot cocoa. The students painted the with colored chocolate and then they filled in their molds with the milk chocolate. While the chocolate was setting, they decorated six cupcakes in "loving" ways. All of the students had a wonderful time! Back in November, as a part of the Grade 6 curriculum: Ancient Worlds, we studied Otzi the Iceman.
During a five-day mini-unit, we hypothesized and created scenarios based on evidence as to what killed Otzi: The students enjoyed this unit. It was there that they saw the only secondary source of Otzi the Iceman. His mummy was found in in the Alps bordering Austria and Italy.
He had been covered in ice for nearly 4, years! They were taught how to do this amazing technique using common household products. Then, they examined pollen under a microscope, since pollen was found in Otzi's stomach. This fact alone can tell you what time of year that Otzi died. Finally, we saw the mummified body and the many artifacts that he left behind.
One wouldn't think that the mummy they saw was not real. This was a terrific extension activity to our Grade 6 unit of study! Sign Language, Part II. In this session, Ms. Alyssa Syznal continued to teach each of us sign language. She taught us many greetings so that we could conduct a small conversation. We proceeded to practice our newfound knowledge of this foreign language with friends.
We found it interesting how we were able to communicate with each other across the classroom and not voice a single word! Our next session will focus on the Family Tree and Holidays! The exhibit will run for two months and the Nassau County reception is held on April 2, and will feature select works from Long Island art students. Congratulations to Gianna and Isabelle! Kennedy on Monday, January 23, and Tuesday, January 24, During the Physical Education classes, all students got to learn a new game called Spikeball. It can be played on the beach, outside, and even in the gymnasium. A great time was had by all students! It has been reported that the suspect stole the band's music sheets for an upcoming competition.
In order to solve the crime, the students found evidence and analyzed it for information. It will be their job as crime stoppers to eliminate suspects based on the information they have gathered from the crime scene. Walsh for working with the students throughout this investigation! On a brisk, but sunny day, Mrs. McKweon, and seventeen students ventured out for a diversity walk of Little India in Hicksville. The group started out at Patel Brothers, where Mr. Patel treated everyone to complimentary pomegranate drinks.
The students went shopping and tried new items. Neel provided everyone with a very in-depth presentation of different Saris and outfits worn at a traditional Indian wedding. Next, they went to Bengali sweet and savory shop where Mr. Geeta provided everyone with delicious customary Indian food which the students absolutely loved. The day concluded at Maharajah market, where once again the students tried new items!
On Wednesday, January 11, , John F. Over 30 classroom winners participated in the school-wide competition. This year's winner was Patrick Dircks from Mr. Kramer's Grade 6 class. Thanks to all of John F. Kennedy's Social Studies teachers who helped organize and run this event. Congratulations to all of the participants! Kennedy's Academy students created stuffed monsters this month during Art class with Ms.
After using a probability worksheet and dice to help select the characteristics of their monster, students first sketched and colored their design on paper. Next, the pieces were cut from felt using their drawings as a guide. Last, each student sewed the pieces together to create a stuffed monster. During this project, students worked on their sewing skills and fine motor skills.
Melodic Performance from Binghamton's Pegs. On Friday, January 6, , John F. Kennedy Middle School students enjoyed a performance from Binghamton's all-girl a capella group, the Harpur Harpeggios. The "Pegs", as they are more commonly known, sang a medley of popular songs and spent some time answering questions as well. Special thanks to the PTA for sponsoring this after school activity and visit! Over the course of three concerts, each grade level was able to celebrate the holidays by entertaining the school community through our annual Winter Concert Series.

On Wednesday, December 21, , students met with Mrs. Noskewitz to create a memory box either for themselves or as a gift. Noskewitz led demonstrations on how to use decoupage to transfer one of their favorite photos onto their box. Directions were then provided to the students so that they could recreate these at home on their own.
On Monday, December 5, , students at John F. Kennedy participated in a 21st Century event led by Mr. Clark to calculate how much it would cost to run a school district. On December 5, , John F. Pizzuto to celebrate Walt Disney's birthday. Students were engaged in various activities that involved a Disney trivia Internet scavenger hunt, a short bibliography of Walt Disney, puzzles, and no-bake Mickey Mouse cookies! The students had a great time making and decorating Mickey Mouse cookies made with Oreos and melted chocolate! On November 15, and November 22, , Grade 6, 7, and 8 students joined Ms.
O'Sullivan for several challenging and competitive rounds of the math game, Combining creativity and technical skill, students utilized addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills to make the number 24 from four numbers on a card while using each number only once.
After honing their skills during the first session, the second session required students to compete against each other and themselves to earn the title, JFK 24 Challenge Champion! Eighth grade student Pawan Pitiranggon earned this honor, but participants agreed that they were ALL winners for having had the experience! Students received a sale flyer detailing the day's promotions borrow three books, get one free! First, they browsed books in their size Lexile or reading level and then selected books that fit their style genre and subject matter.

In addition, the students participated in laboratory experiments including looking at pollen found in Otzi's disgestive system, helping track Otzi's movements in his final hours.

Sign language is a foreign language. Knowledge of the alphabet is a big key to learning sign language. Alyssa taught the attendees the sign language alphabet and from there the students learned to sign their name. All participants were given a sheet with the alphabet and the hand signs on it. An arts and crafts activity involving the students names was completed followed by a long round of deaf Bingo to reinforce the newfound knowledge! Kennedy Library Media Center held a "book tasting" in the "Library Cafe" where Grade 8 English students sampled various books on the menu.
Complete with table settings, a roaring "fire", and flowers on the table, the Library Media Center was transformed into a fancy feast for readers.
