Award-winning videomaker, performance artist, and pop-culture provocateur Kip Fulbeck has captivated audiences worldwide with his mixture of high comedy and personal narrative. In Paper Bullets , his first novel, Fulbeck taps into his Cantonese, English, Irish, and Welsh heritage, weaving a fictional autobiography from 27 closely linked stories, essays, and confessions. By turns sensitive and forceful, passionate and callous, Fulbeck confronts the politics of race, sex, and Asian American masculinity head-on without apology, constantly questioning where Hapas fit in a country that ignores multiracial identity.
Raised in southern California by a Chinese-born mother and a Caucasian father, Fulbeck pushes the conventions of literary form as he simultaneously draws from, recreates, and fabricates his own life history.
Paper bullets : a fictional autobiography
His range of experiences--from college professor to youth outreach volunteer, blues player to surfer and lifeguard--informs his witty and humane writing. Like himself, his protagonist is a young man shaped by the conflicting mores, stigmas, desires, and codes of male conduct in America. He searches for and mismanages love and independence, continually experimenting with sex along the way. Sometimes hilarious, always heartfelt, surfing the trivia of pop culture and sound bits, his inner voice shifts continually among the real, the perceived, and the imagined.

I used it for teaching writing and thinking in university courses full of Chinese students. Fulbeck's anecdotal approach allows for assigning short enough readings that are sophisticated and rich. It was challenging reading for international students--figurative and sophisticated, but once they got the nuances, they loved the impetus to think and then had something of their own to say.

This is a very masculine and sexual book by a great hapa advocate that encourages the reader to think about their own personal experiences on the road to self identification. As a potential grad student of Asian American Studies, I was interested in Kip Fulbeck's work, so I took it upon myself to read one of his books: Kip Fulbeck isn't presented as a guy who comes from a harsh background and rise up from his struggles; he's presented a guy who is definitely privileged And, how those three identities change as he grows up and makes a life for himself.
When we come to the end and he goes into his soliloquy about his wife, and random things Writing of that type where instructors who teach literature or writing love to ask, "What was the author trying to say? It reminds me of an independent film that wants to be vague in that ending sequence, just for the sake of being vague. And, the filmmaker usually winds up saying in an interview, "Well, I want the audience to figure it out for themselves.
