Real life LASD cliques have also been implicated in some pretty nasty shit, so I could see that being part of it too. I got the complete opposite feeling, if anything they really go out of their way to make you root against the cops. Butler's character is just a complete piece of shit, in that party scene he literally says they are the real bad guys. I guess I could see someone thinking that is just a badass line, but it follows with him doing other bad things with little pay off and his personal life is completely falling apart.
Who would want that or celebrate it? In comparison the thieves have a good family life and they constantly note how they are trying to avoid hurting civilians even if the ending shoot out kind of throws that out, but that whole sequence was ridiculous from the cop's perspective too. Exactly, the movie just showed bad cops, just because they were cops and trying to stop a robbery didn't mean they were the good guys. Actually I think in the end there wern't any really Protagonists, everyone was an Antagonist. I liked it, the movie worked. Movie was solid but the whole heist made no sense.
How did Gerald Butler know exactly how to find them after the bank job? He found them on a random street in a traffic jam in the city of LA. Donnie O'Shea Jackson snitched and told them they were heading to the junkyard.
It just made no sense how Gerry went straight for the Federal Reserve after the tunnel. Also at the end when he saw those two cash counters at the end and it hit him. How would he even know who they were? They knew they were robbing the federal reserve, Donny told them. They followed them from the meet up point to the shitty bank they held up. Once Nick realized they had escaped he knew where they were headed.
They knew Ice Cube had been there. Possibly casing the joint. This is just head canon, of course, because they never establish this in the movie. The "change of venue" to the Pico-Riviera bank was on the same day. So he clued in they went with their original plan. I just saw the film last night. I'm pretty sure he heads to the reserve because that's where the money for the fake Pico bank robbery would come from and on the way they see Donnie. More like how did Butler know exactly where to go after the fake bank robbery?
They literally surveyed them casing the Federal reserve. Donnie told them what was up without actually saying "the federal reserve". Nick's character wasn't dumb, when he saw the sewage line linking Pico and the Reserve he put two and two together, that's why he and his team left Pico to the FBI. That's what the studio did for the international market.
I was so confused reading the comments in this thread about those scenes and haven't seen them in the movie myself, so I did some research. Why didnt they give the Merrimen guy a reason for why he assembled a heist team n do wut they do?
Den Of Thieves (Marcus King Series) (Volume 3): MP Zorn: theranchhands.com: Books
After the military did they just hate the government? All the debt the US has occured and the lack of transparency and accountability? Towards the beginning of the film when Merrimen is handing out guns, he says something along the lines of "let's not have any accidental misfirings" and it cuts to Evan Jones's character he played Cheddar Bob. Anybody know who was in the soccer photo with Donnie besides the other garbage driver and the somoan? Did I miss something? That's who that was. Wasn't sure if it was the person that gave up his badge or not. OK, hopefully people are still reading this thread.
I just saw this, and if anyone really thinks they understand how the heist worked, please read this. The rest of this message is obviously not for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. OK, so the point of the local branch robbery was to get enough cash to take to the reserve.

Donnie is packed in with it to get to the counting room. He sneaks out and starts shovelling cash into black bags. I am guessing this cash is from the "to be destroyed" pile in the room. But what actually happens to the black bags? They were in a bin on its way to the shredder room, so how did they avoid the shredder? I just don't get what the idea was of what he did in the counting room, and how no one noticed the to-be-shredded pile disappeared.
A few other odds and ends: And where did they get the glass cube money bins: My guess on the clear cubes is that they were inside the first truck, just not filled with money yet, which was enough for people to call it empty. The garbage men are both in on the heist and part of Dillons team so they knew the black bags would be in the trash. So you think the shredder was in the counting room, and he was skipping money from "before" the shredder to "after" it? The movie never did show the area around the shredder, just the chute blowing bits through; I assumed it was in a lower area, and someone's job was to take the "to shred" pile to the shredder room.

And Pablo Schreiber's acting was really nicely understated. He didn't give anything away, except he's a badass motherfucker. Would say a 6. Probably at least 20 minutes too long, however. No female characters of note. Didn't completely bother me that the movie only has two set pieces, but this could have probably used an extra one in the middle. Gerard Butler has his best role in years at least, intentionally hilarious where the script asks for it and badass when needed.
Pretty predictable plotting but the twist caught me off guard. Maybe a tad too unfathomable but doesn't completely collapse on itself. Would recommend to crime drama lovers, anyone else on the fence it'll be on Netflix by the summer. But my god, that twist ending really ruined it for me.
When I saw Donnie's face when Nick's team went after Merrimen, I knew then n there that he'd escape and either grab the money, or something, and meet up with the team later. When they went down that threw my theory off, but the twist was nice afterwards. All that being said I thought it was a pretty entertaining popcorn movie. Good action, committed performances especially the main bad guy and an interesting enough plot to keep us engaged. Meh, he had like How did Donnie get snuck in with the money then get out and no one noticed the difference in weight and sound the alarm?
I know the one counter says something about there only being half, but that part didn't make sense to me. I saw it on a critics film studies look and I thought it was pretty good. The Hypermasculinity and commentary and use of atypical dialogue and comedic use of it half the time Gerard was eating like classic cop movies of the 80's and 90's to give him that edge. There was also some John Woo themes of overcompensating thrown in.
The ending with the accent, I don't think it worked completely but I think they kept it in to emphasize the twist ending scenario like Usual Suspects.

I actually quite liked this movie. Great shoot-outs some of the best I've scene in years , solid acting from most and a surprisingly intense heist scene. With that being said, I'm surprised with how much they openly ripped off from Heat. Like, it was ridiculous at some points. Just came from seeing this on my night off. Finally said, fuck it and checked it out.
The bartender framed the boss and completely shifted the LASD's focus away from himself. Can anyone explain to me how mini ice cube switched out the real money for the shredded bills?

Or are we to assume the swap happened somehow in the dumpster?? They showed like 3 seconds of the cash being put in a tire, but that tells me nothing of the timeline. So you see these two garbage trucks meeting at the intersection and give each other a nod. An old guy and a bold-headed guy. Yes, there is a swap. But instead they took the other guys truck who had the shredded bills.
So the old guy took the bills to mini ice cube after he escaped. Towards the end, Gerard saw a picture of mini ice cube, the old guy, the bold-headed guy and a few others who you might recognize dressed in soccer uniforms. Then comes the realization that mini ice cube was the master mind of it all.
Glad to hear you liked it! I've been looking forward to it.
Ratings aren't looking great right now, but I'll still watch it. I have a bunch of free movie passes from Christmas and was looking forward to Den of Thieves and 12 Strong so planned to see both same night. Saw Den of Thieves at and 12 Strong at Should have seen 12 Strong first as Den of Thieves much better. Especially the gun effects were much, much better in Den of Thieves. Saw it today, was nothing special. The finale was heavy hitting, though, shame it took the entire film to build up to that. Den of Thieves was perfect. Solid heist movie, slightly confusing, but good performances and enjoyable enough.
The scene where the garbage trucks overlap each other was pretty confusing. That Usual Suspects ending. His accent in the London pub? That was pretty shit. But not as shit as Michael Bispings cameo. I just watched it today and this is so true. I don't know how to describe it, but the guns just sounded much more "real" and unadulterated compared to those in other action movies. I hope this series is extensive in size, and I look forward to the next installment.
One person found this helpful. Once again, MP Zorn provides significant insight into the precarious status of America's and the world's financial institutions. This novel continues the story line of the two previous novels and is, unfortunately, completely believable. The Marcus King character is beginning to move from idealistic "white hat" to a more pragmatic, permanent problem solver. The world isn't all black and white and Marcus King has moved into the grey area.
