This is a fantastic bilingual book - exactly what I wanted to help teach my half-Japanese son a bit about his language and culture. The illustrations really are beautiful, and perfectly capture many aspects of Japanese life. I don't know how historically accurate the story is, but it's nice enough and has a few moral messages for young readers. I would recommend any of the other books by this author as well! Well done - I'm glad I ordered it.

Yuko chan and the Daruma Doll

Jan 25, Angela rated it it was amazing. This book is an inspiring work of art with a great story to be told, it is bilingual in English and Japanese too! I absolutely love this book! I have all 4 of Sunny Seki's Japanese folktale children's books, and each time I open them, I am continually impressed by the vibrant, unique, and artistic illustrations inside!

In addition to the beautiful images, the kids love these Japanese folktale books such as this one about the Daruma doll, in addition to his other books such as the Lucky Cat Mane This book is an inspiring work of art with a great story to be told, it is bilingual in English and Japanese too!

In addition to the beautiful images, the kids love these Japanese folktale books such as this one about the Daruma doll, in addition to his other books such as the Lucky Cat Maneki Neko , The Kappa character, or his newest one about the origin of the Kokeshi Doll. The stories are often very heartwarming with a wonderful moral at the end. This particular book is an inspiring story about the compassion, courage, and cleverness of a little blind girl who saves her village by creating a small red daruma doll to sell after a volcano devastated the town.

The story has some cultural notes at the end which provide the history of the curious little Daruma dolls that I often saw around Japan and in stores too usually in restaurant windows or behind sales counters. I appreciated the notes about why they are often sold without pupils painted in their eyes - it has to do with making a wish and drawing in one eye for your wish, and the other eye when your wish comes true! I had never known about this before reading this book, so I found it very interesting, and the kids had lots of fun playing with a daruma doll I bought after they read the book and were inspired by it.

This is a great book especially for people who have struggled with disabilities, because the main character is a young girl navigating life in old Japan and she is blind with a guide dog! Despite her perceived disability, the book highlights her strength, courage, and her determination. I would also recommend this book if you are trying to learn or teach Japanese, because it has both languages on the same page in an easy to read and understand format for beginners.

I highly recommend this book for so many reasons! Feb 11, Andrew Swanson rated it it was amazing Shelves: Yuko-chan, a blind girl, lives at the Daruma Temple in the village Takasaki. Her village has fallen on hard times since the volcano, Asama-san, erupted and covered the land and crops with ash.

Inspired by the words of the Daruma, that if you fall seven times you must get up eight, Yuko-chan seeks a way to save her village, and after being lost in the snow, comes across the idea of the Daruma doll. This is a wonderfully illustrated and inspiring tale about perseverance and hope. I loved that the t Yuko-chan, a blind girl, lives at the Daruma Temple in the village Takasaki.

I loved that the text is written both in English and Japanese, and that the stories both are slightly different depending on the language. Definitely a new favorite for this Japan-lover! Aug 13, Peg rated it it was ok Shelves: Blind, orphaned Yuko-Chan is able to help her village recover from the effects of a volcanic eruption through the making of Daruma Dolls to be sold. The bilingual text reads awkwardly and has too modern a feel for the times. I question the fictional Yuko-Chan's freedom and her sauciness, especially with her elders.

Seki's illustrations are lively and colorful while giving a detailed look at life in a Japanese village.
