To clarify, I think a gender neutral main character would be awesome, but maybe not for this project; it would have to be the focal point of the story.

That said, Elliot may have a little friend who you will meet in the first book who finds it a bit easier to be gender-neutral! Nyika is a baby bull who was orphaned because of the illegal ivory trade in Africa. The elephant population in Africa is in peril, as long as the ivory trade continues. Left unchecked this could see the population of African Elephants wiped out in under 20 years.

Nyika was found wandering in the wilderness of Kenya, exhausted, desperate for water, and worst of all, completely alone. Several females has recently been found killed in the area, perhaps one of these was his mother.

He has lots of new friends there who have similar sad stories, but who now have each other, as well as a loving, dedicated staff to see that they are loved and nourished. He is doing very well, and has found a new family and home. You too can foster an elephant in need. Elephants also have the best memories, so they will never forget your kindness! Elly, Nyika and I thank you for anything you can do to help. My little white and blue friend would later serve as one of the inspirations for Little Elliot.

The woman who fosters elephants in Kenya - Telegraph

Please try again later. Both this and the little rabbit version are must haves for bedtime. My son who always wants to "stay up all night" and can read through several bedtime books without so much as a yawn falls asleep before we hit halfway. So relaxing, almost hypnotic and meditative. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Bought based on reviews of kids just falling asleep within pages, having no luck so far. I read the instructions yes there is one page of instructions to the reader on how to read the book but I find it too confusing when you emphasize a word now and then that doesn't seem to warrant emphasis. My 2yo daughter could care less and it doesn't make her tired at all. She loves book time and has a very large vocabulary for her age compared to most kids but perhaps she is just too young. Maybe we will try again in a year or twoand mom will need to watch a video on how to read it.

She is however into and has actually fallen asleep to the Dr. Perhaps that is better for younger children. Audio CD Verified Purchase. I use this in my preschool classroom at nap. The soothing voices are what does it. I'm so glad I bought the cd version because the speaker's voice is what makes it work.

She didn't fall asleep during i knew she wouldn't BUT she let me say goodnight and put her brother to sleep without calling for me once!

Ricky Ubeda - "Elephant" - Hall of Fame Regional 2013

It was helpful that we had a elephant that I told her was Ellen from the story. It is a long story so i skipped a decent chunk knowing she would stay awake. Bedtime was never horrible. It did, however, consist of no fewer than three books, a couple songs, telling a story, and then rubbing his head until he was drowsy enough for me to leave. One and done now. We had to read this three nights in a row until he felt comfortable with the story, and we got the rhythm of it down.

Now, he asks for the elephant story and by the end he is out like a light. It seems to be a form of hypnosis. The suggestions are clear and repetitive which is just what you want.

I cannot recommend this book or it's brilliance enough. My 3 year old son has such My 3 year old son has such a hard time falling asleep.

Tonight when he picked out his 3 books he picked this one and asked that we read it last. He wanted to read about the brave elephant in the forest. We only made it half way before he was snoozing soundly. I have a feeling he will want to read it again tomorrow because we still do not know what all happens in the forest. Saying his name really drew him into the story. But, more pictures would be great for toddlers. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

I got this book after reading the rabbit version to my 2 yo last night.

Reading this book and the rabbit version, she fell asleep before we even finished! That has never happened with any book before. I don't know if either book will work a second time, but just once when needed is more than worth it.
