I am sure anyone reading this can guess that reality was not a factor in this dream of mine and that things did not turn out exactly as planned. Luckily for me, I am an optimistic, generally happy person by nature so having all of my vague goals not come true did not throw me into a pit of unhappiness.

However, I often found and still find that I have times of general dissatisfaction and unhappiness without being able to pinpoint exactly why. The Post-College Guide to Happiness helps layout some of the reasons why people are unhappy and gives not only advice on how to become a happier person but gives exercises that can jump start you on your way. The book is divided into eight chapters: Each chapter also contains exercises specifically geared towards these components of happiness and the reader is able to customize which exercises would be most beneficial for them.
The author makes a point of stating that not everyone will need help in all components of happiness listed and I found that, even though that statement is true, every chapter had important information in it that can be beneficial to anyone. For me the most interesting chapters were the first four. Bryan Cohen explains in Brain Bliss that even if you have always felt dissatisfied or unhappy you can actually change this by working to become a happier person and therefore strengthening your neural pathways to actually change your brain chemistry to be happier.

I found that fascinating! He also points out in various chapters that money does not buy happiness but doing what you truly love to do, even if it doesn't pay as much as that big job does, will ultimately make you happier. He points out that finding true love and having love and compassion for others will lead to happiness but that happiness is not sustainable if you forget to love yourself and keep in mind what you really want out of life.
It definitely works to reaffirm what many of us already know but don't take the time to think about very often. All in all this is a really good study of some fundamental ways to make our lives happier, healthier and more satisfactory, no matter what our circumstances.
I will definitely be using some of these exercises in the future. Often self-help books can be a tedious read because of so many facts and details. I'm so glad that this book didn't go in that direction.. So now the question is, did it offer enough valuable information? By George it did! Cohen did his homework and compiled practical happiness achieving exercises and outline them well. He even threw in a bit of humor to help you move along in the reading. The author's approach to the guide was drawn from personal hands-on tried experience.
Still a young-single lad, I was skeptical at the degree of value his short experience would weigh on his perspective toward a long range of sustaining happiness. However, this guide referenced several school of thoughts on the subject, so basically he picked out what he felt were the best ones and showed us how we can incorporate them into our daily life since he tried them himself. There was enough enriching substance in the guide that even picking a few of the exercises would provide one a great start at living a happy life though I wasn't crazy about the Law of Attraction section because personally I didn't like the book it was based on, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.
Also, I couldn't help but smile at the realization that I was practicing some of those exercises already. Overall, this was a user friendly and beneficial potentially life changing handbook for a happier today and everyday. I am especially grateful that Mr.
Cohen outlined it all up in the end because I would have had a heck of a time going back to certain passages considering I have an ebook version of this book. So thank you for the summary. To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind.
