My legs were the first to lose most of their strength, confining me to a wheelchair when I was fifteen. At age 21, my diaphragm lost its strength, requiring me to use a ventilator to breathe.

If I tried to raise my hand right now, it would feel as if heavy chains were holding it down. When I began needing a ventilator, my heart also seemed chained.
I felt a heaviness weighing upon me and despaired that there was no relief in sight. I had given up on life because all seemed hopeless.
