If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to come back as a French woman! If I have answered a few of your questions… Well that makes me really happy! I love your interview! A fabulous woman is independent, takes risks sometimes calculated , dresses according to their mood, tastes and body. Originality becomes the fabulous woman, be her nationality, French, Italian, Spanish or English.

What a delightful post! Thanks for sharing all your insights into the style of French women, it is greatly appreciated. Why do I let these women keep me up at night?!!? I enjoyed this interview. You took a tough concept, impossible to define, and even more impossible to stake claim to that definition, and followed it through with wit and wisdom, and your always wonderful humor!

I do so love reading your blog. It helps to know I can at least still understand French.

La confiance en soi: I look at your photos of such beautiful french women and ask myself how I can ever look like them — now I know how! You are so right about self-confidence — all youw women exude it…I need to work on that! Oui il y a un peu de ce dont Joanna parle. Comment peut-on y aller?

Not even to go to the gym: Not on a Sunday morning. Our clothes are generally pretty well fitted — less playing with volume.

Less contrasts in general. Accessories tend to be on the matte side scarves rather than bling. We manucure less visibly a touch of transparent polish. And so on… Even our engagement rings are smaller! Oh I love Joanna! She is so cute! I am American, so this is an outside point of view. Their bags and purses scarcely seemed to carry much, each person also had an explored style, like liking blue or liking to play with textures. But the one thing that really stood out where the shoes! Oh, the French have the most fantastic, impeccably clean shoes! I was so thrilled to read about Joanna on your site!

I very much enjoyed the questions and answers. I loved this article! As a complete outsider American—Texan—who has only been to Europe—Italy—once , I can only offer my impressions. I let a little frizz stay sometimes. I focus more on skincare than cosmetics, using makeup only to protect my skin SPF and enhance a bit of blush and mascara. I streamlined my closet, keeping only things that both look good on me and make me feel good. Also, I have resolved to learn French so that I can come back and read all of the comments on this post! Classic shapes and textures, minimal accessories. Nothing trendy or stolen from the pop culture.

Mon amie Marlena

Oh sure, there are a few exceptions, but basically, the french woman is. As an American who lived in Paris for a year, I had plenty of time to study French style. Anyway, returning from France I got to go through reverse culture shock, which helped me define what I had found to be French style. First, and most importantly, the French appreciate a woman of a certain age. In Paris I was just becoming interesting at 30, and I find that more appealing. Americans have become too much about quantity, not quality. I have one gorgeous Celine black dress.

The interest is in the re-mix of that one dress. Dresses, skirts, trousers, whatever, the waist is defined. I also always have at least one form of striped shirt every season, never wear leggings and love skirts and dresses.

Phew, hoping I passed the test. I live in New York and love all things French but have never been to France, so I think this qualifies me as a nonexpert! Then you must temporarily retire the scarf until it has safely gone back under the radar again. Your blog is lovely — I enjoy it enormously. Use tons of expensive skincreams and maybe less makeup than other women.

Spend some time in front of the mirror, but not too much. Smoke if they like to, and cope with it. Laugh when they feel like it. Have this sparkle in the eyes. Pretend not to be what they are. Pretend to be what they are not. Are relaxed but not too much. Wear perfume like a scarf and scarves like a perfume. Some even avoid ballet flats that make you walk like a duck.

Thank you so much for this interview. I agree confidence is key. Thanks for diving into the world of the beautiful and always perfectly dressed FF! After 4 years living in Paris and marrying a Frenchmen I do believe the mystery and a look that is not too perfect is key. I loved this post and Garance, I adore your blog. Loved both the clever questions and their witty answers, especially the part about French women lying without shame: I have been an admirer of French style ever since I first discovered Vogue in high school, and took my honeymoon in Paris in Reading your posts is like receiving little postcards from France.

She also speaks of easy elegance, and the kind of self confidence that comes not from molding your body through hours in the gym, but loving it for what it is and knowing you are sexy the way you are. As for the perfume, just yesterday I bought a new bottle of Amarige by Givenchy. At least I can say a moins je peux dire que my wrists and neck are French chic today!

Mes amis ici me disent: Thank you thank you for the English translations, what a lovely surprise today, to be able to understand your funny, fresh commentary. I get a little jealous: Hope to see you again at NY Fashion week next month. Until then, keep the brilliant post coming, please. Dear Joanna, there are different kinds of French women. Parisian, living in a great city but not Paris, living by the seaside, etc. Yes, if ELLE said to do so. I sport very very short hair. I totally agree with Garance. Especially the Parisian one.

They look like snowmen, but are so cheery.

Thanks to blogs, there are many. Once again, I agree with Garance. Only foreigners believe in this. You see wat I meen? Wonderful blog, and an insightful post! Or is it that the others flirt with her? And even though I love color, I have to admit looking at sites like these has made me want to wear more subdued colors at least some of the time. I wish I could limit my wardrobe and pick well made pieces by my favorite clothing lines, but I have to stick to cheaper stuff even though I do limit how much of the cheaper clothing I buy and have become pickier about fabric quality.

Older women know who they are and seem more comfortable in their own skin. Similarly, if you were to take a French girl out of Paris…well you get the picture. Ah,my dream is to go to France, where I have convinced myself that the French woman is very thin and stylish chic in a simple manner. I have lost 10 pounds, persuaded my husband to buy me Christian Louboutin pumps and I am learning all I can to cloth my body with the French look.

So you are helping me. Dressing like a french woman is also a resolution for me. It never occurred to me that french woman dress randomly because they look so put-together.. In a non-affected way of course. Oddly, it makes me feel better. The style and aura of each woman amazed me and inspired me to get more creative and to walk with more confidence. French women would also never walk out of the house improperly dressed from my observations. This is the main reason I love them! But the French woman acts as if they are not there — she is comfortable with the female touches oh, we Americans are Puritans!

À la recherche du diable perdu

All this — with the calm, quiet face — that is what you only see in truly chic women, I think and then I have to add that in Italy — the women take it one step further — they are as chic but they also smile! But the Californian looks more blank than calm and collected, her clothes are labored, matchy, careful layers of brand new AA baby ribbed shirts, etc, etc. I hate to stereotype, but I will make an exception because I think the stereotype is positive.

The impression that I have is that French women value quality over quantity. One good piece of clothing better than a dozen mediocre pieces. A whole closet full of clothes is no good if nothing is made well. Of course, being from the vast middle of America, I romanticize French women and French fashion. I know it is irrational, but I hope it does not make me a hopeless provincial or a prejudiced rube. Please understand that I dream of a place better my sadly corrupt city—a place where beautiful things are not destroyed wantonly, where each person is valued for their uniqueness, where creativity is rewarded.

Maybe that place is Paris?

Whatever the case, bring on the inspiring photos of beautifully dressed people! When I think French women, I think a pout and something that seems a little dangerous. And when I first went to Paris, I immediately noticed that everyone had a beautiful coat and boots. I so love this interview! I was wondering if you could follow up with skin-care and beauty advice — I notice that all of the women on your site, regardless of age, have a stunning complexion. Are there any secrets you can share with us? There is just an attitude about French women that it is impossible to capture!

I was amazed when I visited Paris last year at how thin the French women were. Even those women over 50 were slender and chic. I would love to live in Paris for a year so that some of that elegance might rub off on me! I debated whether to comment in English or French, but decided my first language, English would have to suffice. Although I am only a lowly 14 year old Canadian teen, I had to comment because your blog is absolutely enchanting.

But, I could ramble on forever, so before I start, wonderful post! I think I might love French style as much as Joanna Goddard.. American women often look desperate to be noticed, yet untouchable. I spend part of each year in Paris and can usually spot my fellow North American women: A French woman does not demand that her body be perfect; if she has a tummy, she will still wear a pencil skirt rather than hiding it under a full style.
