This makes you depressed which in turn sours your writing. The odds are swinging away from a successful submission through an agent to a publisher. But with the advent of the internet, it has never been easier to have strangers read your work. I believe that whatever genre you choose, despite the fact that there are millions of bloggers and short story posters and homepage entertainers, the cream will float to the top. Still attempting to be an illustrator who writes rather than a writer who illustrates.
People running in circles. Get yourself out the house and into the sun. Better still, go to the flicks. There are a couple of movies out today that you may be interested in. The Purge was one of those low-budget high-concept ideas that really found an audience. The story of a family subjected to a night of terror on the single night Americans are allowed to commit brutal acts of violence was an effective contained thriller. Anarchy plays out on the lawless streets, where a grieving cop played by Frank Grillo — we like him — plans to get his revenge on the people who killed his boy.
And this being The Purge, there are lot of people will knives and creepy masks. See you on Monday, yeah? Which author will it be, I wonder? Ostland by David Thomas is a harrowing and haunting novel based on the true story of Georg Heuser, a morally upright, ambitious and blandly likeable young murder detective in Berlin who hunts a serial killer known as the S-Bahn murderer — and who subsequently becomes a war criminal, responsible for tens of thousands of deaths.
Ostland asks us all sorts of questions about what it takes to make a normal man into a brutal monster and we are invited to consider what we ourselves would do in the same situation. A subplot about a pair of war crimes prosecutors investigating Heuser provides a last sardonic coda. The hunt for the S-Bahn murderer in the first part of the book is a thrilling ride, but multiply that slaughter by thousands, by millions, and we are sickened.
Any novel is going to stick with you if it has an underlying theme. Theme is the dark matter that binds a novel together. You can get it from places like this. With a Russian Gulag thrown in. So the book is about a crossword-setter called John Fellowes who discovers that the crossword-setter under scrutiny was his grandfather.
So he tries to get to the bottom of it. I used to do the Daily Telegraph Cryptic every morning while I was writing the book, and do my best with the Saturday Times large cryptic. I was never that fast, but really enjoyed it. But then I had kids, more paid work and eventually ran out of excuses to do cryptic crosswords during office hours. The appeal is that their lateral, theoretical thinking made a huge difference to the war. Previously, wars were won by brute strength, tactics and the weather. But the employment of mathematicians, musicians, linguists and all manner of clever folk gave the Allies such an advantage when the most needed it.
I occasionally stay up into the small hours to get something finished, or enjoy the peace, quiet and lack of distracting emails and tweets. In general, I try to get the hard yards done by lunch, then after lunch do some exercise, then get back to the desk, or do something else.

I essentially deleted about two dissertations-worth of writing. But it has to be done. Resentment, denial, rage and defensiveness. Then self-doubt kicks in, followed by a desire for revenge, culminating in despair. And then you read the feedback, or notes, again and get on with your job. Ultimately, you know when a note or a comment is on the money. When I give notes or feedback to others, I always tell them to ignore the things I say that just sound stupid or ridiculous. But act on the notes that are vocalising something they secretly suspected all along. I read Terry Pratchett, obviously.
Like everyone else, I think Mort is the best, followed by Guards! And more than a little sad too. Black has created a compelling character in Brennan but he's particularly good at showing the lives of people on the margins of Edinburgh society, the grimy underbelly of smack heads and low lives. Truth Lies Bleeding is another cracking slice of the dark side of life from Tony Black and proof that he's got plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

Great plot, characters good, bad and indifferent. One man's struggle to bring justice to two cleverly interwoven murders. Let me at the second in the series!!!! I would have given this book 5 stars if there were more swear words, as the Prude promised.
But she's off her rocker, folks. No curses in the first paragraph. Or first chapter, for that matter.
