While quirky and fascinating for any fan of the biographies and certainly more than expansive, Carlyle's work on Frederick the Great proves even within the first volume that it is less than ideal as an objective account. He slips seamlessly from passable reports of history to broad generalizations and moralizing rants about the 18th century and the course of human history. If you're looking to learn the basics about Frederick the Great, definitely pick up a different book.
