Follow Brian on Twitter: Language is fluid and changes with time according to common usage, just as it always has. IMO, whatever is used, lay, lain, laid, lie, the reader will get the meaning. Language is used to communicate. If the message is understood, the language is correct. Which is correct in a sentence such as: Gets me every time.

You generally want to match your verb tense in a story or any other work especially when it comes to narration. Or there is prophecy with future. The exception being when a certain time frame has been mentioned you use that tense. I think I understand, but still need some clarification on when you are speaking of a third party laying or lying. Would it be correct to say: Really, this is so much more complicated than it needs to be.

Lie, lay, lain refers to humans. I am going to lie down; I want to lie in the sun; etc. If you can remember the present tense, you can work with the other two tenses. Lay, laid, lain refers to un-human objects. I lay the book on the table; I laid it there yesterday; I had lain it there before, but my sister took it.

Sorry, seems like you are contradicting the original article here. I lay the book on the table; I laid it there yesterday; I had lai d it there before, but my sister took it. You can lay your baby down to sleep, or even lay your head down on a pillow, just the same as you can lay a book down on the table. This article was very helpful and came quite handy when I was proofing one of my poems. Ds are blowing it these days.

Actually, there are three verbs to deal with. I lie there now; I lay there yesterday; I have lain there often; I was lying there to lie by not telling the truth: I lie now; I lied yesterday; I have lied often; I was lying yesterday to lay something down: That is, they do not need an object to follow. This is what makes the study of grammatical usage fun; the solution to one problem leads to another. I think annaschauer is correct on this one. When it is not used as an appositive, it is used when the doer of the action and the receiver of the action are the same person.

It is likely a simple matter of the poet preferring the way it sounds in the poem and taking artistic liberty with grammar. I learned from a teacher who used hens as examples. I have made a similar entry in my own blog, http: It took me three hours of reading tons and tons of articles on this problem to finally get it through.

Worse yet, I have a major problem with the whole concept for my novel, because what people consider objects to be placed on a surface stuffed animals are the characters in the story. I do understand, when they recline, they lie. When they are placed on a table, they lay. Have you ever had your favorite stuffed animal lie down on its own? Hate to say this, but this seems to be more of a problem to American writers than to British ones.

I recently saw a published novel by a very good American crime writer who made this mistake several times but I must admit I once saw it in a British novel as well. Thanks for the clarification, anyway.

And thanks for all the excellent tips for NaNoWriMo! This is very, very helpful information. This book was pretty good. It started out slow but got better after a few chapters. I predicted the ending. This was the first book that I have read from this author. Jul 16, Allison rated it liked it. I have loved all of her other books, but this one just seemed "rushed".

And the things that happen in it as far as emotions of the main character don't seem even remotely realistic. Apr 23, Kris added it.

Lay vs. Lie (vs. Laid)

Didn't see that ending coming!! A good thriller which I really enjoyed. I wish it hadn't told us that Annie's twin disappears with Annie's baby! While it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out what's going on it would have kept the suspense going a bit longer if you weren't expecting that to happen - but that's only my opinion.

Nevertheless, a good read. Jul 17, Tammy rated it liked it. The book was a quick, easy to follow read. Yikes This book started out slow, but I am glad I kept reading. It grabs you by the throat and won't let go. The ending was shocking to say the least Jun 21, Karen Mirabito rated it liked it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Julie is captured in Italy and brought back to the USA to face the charges. Settling back into life Annie is pregnant again and feeling like everything has fallen back into place until she makes a terrible discovery Aug 25, Shona Moyce rated it it was ok Shelves: The last half of the book certainly went at a better pace than the first half and the twist in the ending was pleasantly unexpected since everything else up to that point was more predictable than the ending of Romeo and Juliet.

The slow build up in the beginning was off-putting however and the main character wasn't always believable. She over reacted to small, more neutral things yet seemed often unfazed by the more horrifying events Her personality was a bit lacking in places. The fact that she identified with her twin so much that she viewed them as one and the same person was odd even for a twin thing - I just couldn't jump on board with the idea of this grown woman having no urge to exert a sense of self.

I found myself skim reading a lot of her inner thought and twin-related blurbs because it was just too ridiculous. The story itself was ok, the writing was fair and it kept me entertained in the two days it took to read it. I have another one by this author on my kindle so here's hoping for a slightly more gutsy protagonist. As for this one, I'd recommend it for passing the time, if you fancy a 'softcore' version of a crime thriller. May 04, Vicky F rated it really liked it. I like books do you! May 06, Deb Kosteniuk rated it liked it. This was the last book I read by Katia Lief. This was a great look at the havoc identity theft cause a person. While I have liked the protagonists in Lief's other books more, I found Annie wishy-washy and the references to breast milk a little annoying. However, a mother who is breast feeding their child WOULD have those feelings and issue if a child was taken away from them.

The author leads you to suspect the sister from the "get-go" so when the double whammy happens, you may be surprised unless you are like me and want to think that if a person is a cheater, that's not all they may be up to. I found this book harder to believe than the previous two I read, but it's her style of writing and pacing that I love so for me this was still a good, but not great, read. Jan 23, Alan rated it really liked it.

So unimpressed by the last few pages of this book. A explanation of what really happened and a weak conclusion. An altercation between Julie and Annie would have worked much better where she reveals her husbands involvement. They got rid of her character too soon and wrote her away weakly. 1. See a Problem?.
  2. The Cove.
  3. The Poetical Works of John Dryden.
  4. Here She Lies;

Totally predictable right off the bat. I thought the outcome was too obvious knowing the twists she throws in on her other books until the middle of the book when it was totally clear. The end had a bit of a twist, though the "bad guy" was still the "bad guy" And kind of reminded me of Gone Girl a bit. The theme of identity theft was so relevant and eye-opening in today's world. Glad I read this.

I struggled getting into this book but once I got into part 2 I couldnt put it down. This book makes me feel very greatful that me and my twin arent identical oh the damage that can be done to your idenity once your twin sister gets ahold of it.

Here her life falls apart when she is arrested for grand larceny and internet fraud. Once this is cleared up she thinks things will get better however they get much worse when she is arrested for murder.

Read this book to find out who the real murderer is. Dec 09, Kelly James rated it did not like it. Did not like this book. The main character was completely one dimensional. My teenage son read the back of the book when I bought it and told me what was going to happen I read the book very hard to get through and he was right. That type of predictability and lack of depth was very disappointing. Nov 24, Nina rated it it was amazing. This book is about the relationship of twins and a husband.

Lots of twists and turns and a surprising ending. I personally did not like the ending and having said that, I do not know given the plot how else it could have ended. I would have finished the book sooner however work and sleep interfered. A real page turner. Apr 22, Cori Arnold rated it it was ok.

    She Lies - Wikipedia

I didn't like some of the really long descriptions that didn't contribute to the story. I really didn't like the main character, but I wanted to. She just whined and worried a little too much instead of doing something productive. Jan 03, Rosi Moore-fiander rated it it was ok. Overall a disappointing read: Annie was an irritating character, and despite a number of twists and turns the plot was predictable yes, even the denouement.

A good read, but a little predictable. The characters are okay, but there is little development. A little heavy on "oh, so unexpected story twists".
